He’ll sell cheaper off trademe through the forum - with the scope - if he can meet you any closer, it’s worth the drive.

Currently $1300 on the forum. With all the extra bits and the knowledge its a good shooter, its a pretty sharp deal. Someone on the forum might be able to help with transport...

Looking to spend around 2k so something reliable but doesn't have to be flashy (was looking into getting a 2nd hand Sako but want to see else I could get).
@earplay Your 7mm08 might fit this fellas bill...But he cannot acccess the buy sell yet so wont be able to see it....

An hour round trip is worth it especially when you get to meet other forum members...I have met soe really decent people via here....Just bear in mind that he travel often turns out to be the quick part of the trip - once gun fellas start talking guns...day can turn into night pretty quick....

If you look at second hand, its better to get one that's all original, even if its done a few miles and a couple of thousand rounds.
Some beautiful pieces have swapped stocks, barrels, new triggers, modified magazines and so on.
They hang around for ages and no one will buy them.
There's no certainty they will perform as well as a factory unit.

Bergara seem pretty well thought of too. Mid range prices that compare to Tikka.
My opinion is that plastic stocked Tikka are just fine.
It will be interesting to hear how the Tikka plastic magazines are going after 10 or 15 years.
    Regarding tikka magazines.
My tikka t3 6.5x55 is on its 3rd barrel and the mags still working fine. A 5 and 3 shot.
    I have 10 round p-mags for the 223 22-250 and 260.
    I also have a 595 I think, 308 with a 3 and 5 mag.
Tikkas are not a new phenomenon by any means, and have been making quality affordable and accurate rifles for a very long time.
That their incredible popularity is no surprise when they have really only produced firearms that work out of the box with a nice adjustable trigger.
It's only been in the last 15 years that there has been an array of add ons from stocks to bolt handles that were only in the realm of the rem 700 footprint that have given tikka a presence second to none.

I might have a Sako or two as well!

Having moved from the Tron, I'd be taking any chance I could to get south ...stop by the Kaimanawas or Nat Park for a hunt.

+ 1 for Tikka. Ive had a Howa in 308, but switched to a Tikka which I like it much better. Howa was heavy, and I didn’t like the stock much, seemed a bit flexy and point of aim seemed to vary with bipod vs no bipod. Tikka stock seems very solid and zero POI shifts plus very accurate.

In North island go 308 I reckon. They tolerate short barrels with less speed loss than the likes of 270 etc. Short barrels are much nicer to work with on anything but the open tops. If you try reloading 308 has an outrageous number of good projectiles to use, and you can load subsonic which is a lot of fun. Plus ammo availability is good as in 308.

Scopes, hard to go past Leupold VX3 3-10. Great compromise of price, quality and lightweight. One of the lighter good hunting scopes in the market I think. 10x is plenty of zoom for a 308. Only time lower zoom is annoying is when sighting in, but never a problem on animals I don’t think

Hey, I would say don't rush it. I just sold a Tikka .243 on here suppressed for $1000 and a Ruger American suppressed for $750 odd.

Most of the rifles you see on trademe are way overpriced.
Better off saving your money and buying brand new compared to what many are asking.

Don't hamstring yourself to just .308 and .270. 6.5x55, 6.5 creedmore, 30.06, 7mm08 and .243 all be good viable options if one popped up for a decent price. Just be patient. No point in buying something that weighs quarter of a tonne or is a lump of shite.

As far as optics go, there are options for under $1000 for sure. Athlon Argos or Talos, Burris full field IV, sightron stac and others as well.

Stainless Howa lightweights are about $1200 brand new and I think there are threaded ones.

Also re optics, look at the warranties. Let's face it, you are likely to move on what you first buy, and a scope with a transferable lifetime warranty will generally hold its value more than one that doesn't. Also, 2nd hand optics are usually only worth about half the retail price, so bear that in mind. Going rate for a 2nd hand 3-9x Leupold VX1 or Freedom seems to be around $350-450, and if hunting bush a lower mag (2-3x) can be handy for quick target acquisition. I have a Vixen 3-12x40 on my 308, but at low light dawn/dusk I don't use it at more than 6-7x, as image gets dimmer. That's still good enough for a 300m+ shot on a goat/deer sized animal.

Definitely a good buy, I'd suggest you buy it now, work out a deal or several payments if youre short on ready's. And then the good guys on the forum will make sure it gets to you, thats the easy part.

Could be worked out but will still be short on hand as I have to get my car WOF ready, I say waiting til the end of the month since thats when I'll get annual leave and will be able to get all the other necessary equipment for the bush.

That is true, will have to wait until studies and work is finished for the year then I can properly stop by.
