I have witnessed a 500 y (ranged many years later) 223 shot on a small fallow buck. Perfect hilar shot. Went maybe ten meters then rolled down the hill.
The perfect shot was a good gestimation but basicly a fluke.
It had the energy to do the job in that case but it would be madness to recommend shots of that nature even with proper ranging and dialing.
Id call it a good 200m cal on deer in open country.

If my 223 is inadequate there is no hope for my new K Hornet

I plan to use that for all meat hunting from now on. One for one so far.

Good thing about a lot of my hunting on the coast you have to walk away from deer to get a medium range shot or sit a ways away and wait them out.
Can't be fucked with that. I rather get amongst them.

To be fair if I didn't need the odd neck or rib shot I could shoot most of my meat deer with a 22 or shotgun.

I would feel a bit iffy about taking a 500m shot on a deer using the loads I have played around with in my Grendel to be honest.

LOL I would love to see a 50 BMG AR15 upper that was the same weight as a normal 223 upper.....wouldn't want to fire it though

.22 short and 410 I hope you mean? Only an amateur needs a 12 Gauge.

Guess I am an amateur then.

Do 22 subs count? Shot a dozen or so reds with them when trapping possums.

    nah unless it's a 30 grain projectile.

Head shot stacks of goats using .22 subs but never a deer. I have no reason to believe that a well placed head shot on a deer wont do just as well at close range.

Goat is no different to a deer apart from deer having a bigger mellon in general.

Shot a few animals in deer traps with the 22 and 22 subs. Flattened them. So had no qualms shooting them with a 22 when I bumped into them walking around. Not a big deal really. But I spose it might be to people that get no closer to their animals than a few hundred yards.

You with your .22shorts and K-hornet and me with my .223 Savage and budget binos and we would be a formidable team.

Never even fired a short I don't think.

The country I mostly hunt for meat dictates the shooting.

    It is unique in NZ.

When you know it well and even tho semi open you are rarely shooting further than 50yrds.

And if you are not confident clean shooting an animal you would get fuck all.

I meant "subs". Yes, there's a lot of unique aspects to our hunting.

Used my 10/22 when I had nothing else, headshot a whitetail at 80m, it dropped on the spot and wasn't going anywhere but still alive once I got to it.... Wasn't very happy with myself. Guess a 22 is ok out to 50m or so
