    OK back to it.
You asked why not the CM.
The only benefit in the 6mm or 6.5 CM in a short action is that they come standard from the factory with a faster twist barrel than the older 243 and 260. The down side is a slightly smaller powder capacity.
In this case with a custom rifle you can specify a faster twist barrel to take advantage of the heavy pills (in 243 the 105 to 115 gr) and most after market mags (AI etc) allow you to load longer than SAAMI spec (ie about 2.87"). Hence a custom 243 or 260 has the benefit of the heavy pills and also a little more powder capacity at the same time.
Hence why I don't see a custom build CM as being better than a 243/260.

custom built 6.5x55mm would have same advantages I guess...
a .277/08 could have same advantages applied.

Hotsoup....yes Ryan is a genuine GC....but was more refering to his tendancy to buy rifle, get it shooting great ,then flick it on and buy another...almost makes me cry....that 27 nosler wouldve been a thing of beauty to see in action....

I found with cheaper rifles you have a more enjoyable hunt. You don't worry about the dings and a scratches so much.

So far haven't felt under gunned with my 6.5x55.

If I were to ever go after anything larger than a red I'd buy a bigger caliber anyway.

I remember watching an episode of the RSTHC last year and they had a long barrelled rifle with muzzle brake on the end for bush stalking Sika. I was like WTF are they thinking.
I reckon one of Maiseys varimax brakes has a place on a lightweight do it all rifle especially hunting alone. Even a 6.5 or 708 with high BC projectiles can be difficult to spot you own shots from an awkward setup.

I've actually only owned a few guns in my lifetime. The carbonlight that I've now sold can easily be purchased again if I have any regrets
