Both are good enough to work, but I'm hoping for more since it seems like the sensor can do better with more light. I wouldn't mind being able to detect animals further out, but that would be to know if they're worth sneaking up on rather than to take a long shot.

Might be the sensor on this one is less sensitive than others, but given the clarity is good with a more intense light source I think a better illuminator will likely solve my issues. It would be nice if the illuminator didn't cost an arm and a leg, but at some point it becomes a buy-nice or buy-twice thing.

It could also be I'm just asking a lot of a night vision scope.... but hey, no harm in aiming for perfection
The IR on the Pards is a VCSEL and are pretty damn good. I'm surprised your 008 can't do better with the stock IR. My 007 pard and DS35 with the stock IR can identify targets out past 500m.
However Its pretty much a given that more light will give a better image. I have no experience with the convoy IR but I do have other convoy products and I rate them highly. A;though it is LED not VCSEL it should give an improvement if you are just looking for more light, not more range. The safe bet would probably be the V20.
