Thread: Light gun oil

    On balance, Ballistol seems to get the vote, so will go down that route. I'll use up my can of Corrosion X first though. It's good at preventing rust and won't damage non-metal components. Thanks all.

    pretty sure neatsfoot oil was animal based not linseed. i remember using it on leather pistons inside my bsa meteors

    yes it worked okay neatsfoot but stained everything- remember the horse sports day at Whatatutu out of Gisborne - wanted a pair of trou to jump in - borrowed my sisters white jeans - well when I took them back she could not get the brown stains out from my saddle - very pissed off

    Here's a fairly comprehensive test- If you can be bothered reading it. A few surprises here. I don't think it touches on performance of the products when handled though, slipping in and out of bags etc, which may be a factor, but pretty hard to test properly.

    Interesting, have never had anything rust with the ballistol.

    I like Rem oil, its got harder to find recently and the price has got a bit silly!

    Yep, neats foot is from boiled hooves, sheep I think.

    Mink oil as an alternative for leather.

    Yes, I remember the old press, squeezing the oil out of the hooves. It was treated like gold and controlled by one person. All I used on the lathe as an apprentice

    CRC Longlife. Would be mildly surprised if it bulged a barrel with a residual film thickness of at most .02mm or .00078”. But yes, a patch with brake clean works for removal of residue.
