I was speaking to a Branch manager of a Smiths city. What has happened is that they (Smiths City group) have expanded into the North island. The new North Island stores are not carrying a sports dept. And with all the media print advertising being applied to stock all stores carry and paid for by every store, the sports and hunting gear is not being put into the mailers. As such this department will not get any mention in the advertising, so rather than try and sell the department without any form of advertising, a lot of the stores have decided to follow the North island and clear out the sports gear. I saw that Blenheim had a 40% and 50% off on what they had left. Not sure about Kaikoura, but considering it is right next door to a H&F I would not be surprised if they dropped the dept as well. I suspect Chch will simply transfer its stock to the South city Branch rather than clear it out. But if you live near one that has / had a sports dept it may be worth having a look at what they have.
