Generally the bore will be pitted or black looking but not all bad looking bores shoot bad. I had a 243 many years ago that had bad pitting but it still shot well. The muzzle is very important if there is damage there most guns will shoot bad. You could try re crowning if it looks suspect. Also try some other brands of factory ammo, it may just not like Hornady, hand loads could be the ticket to improve accuracy. I read somewhere that those Marlin M7 were pretty good shooters, yours might just be a bad one?
