    New 7mm Backcountry ammo…$200 a box..

I was kind of excited about this new offering, 3000fps from a 170gr bullet out of a 20 inch barrel, was thinking an ultra compact 16inch do it all rifle. But i see a couple places stocking the ammo at $199 a box, that will surely put people off, put me off, thats just a bit silly in my opinion. Maybe not for some, who is buying one?

Peanuts for those that carry 7k "hunting rifles" through the bush.

On a more serious note prices will come down a bit. Just resellers making a buck with early adopters.

Box of twenty, that's ONLY $10 per shot....must do ten round group to see how it shoots, another six for double check of zero....then shoot a deer at fifty yards with one of remaining four rounds.... Yeah nah bit pricey for me too.

I can see ammo for nearer $160-$180 a box.
Yeah expensive, but Federal ammo in other cartridges looks like a similar price.

If you are a factory ammo shooter and only go through a box or two of ammo a year it's not going to make much difference really.

Expensive yes but i think if you've spent the money on the rifle and its being used as a hunting rifle, if you're out once or twice a month and firing only 1 or 2 shots per trip its not the end of the world.

Jesus are you guys all members of the Royal family? Bitcoin trading - oil Exploration - gold mine owners? If I had a rifle that needed $160 - $200 a box ammo I would sell the fucking thing as I was running away. No way am I wasting a $10 cartridge on something as lowly as a deer.

I will make my own black powder and melt my own lead before I pay for for that. I am finding it hard to breathe. Son of a bitch.

If you are looking at other cartridges of similar performance that's how much you have to pay for factory ammo.

Yes it's expensive but comparing it to black powder or reloading when you bought components 10 years ago isn't an apples to apples comparison.

Do you want to know how many 7mm08 cartridges I can load with $200 of components bought today?

    No.

Because this isn't even a cartridge you can realistically reload so again not a fair comparison. Not to mention it's performance is inline with a 7PRC so 7mm08 isn't even the right comparison.

Just to be clear, I have no intention of ever buying this cartridge, or ever buying factory centrefire ammo.
But you need to compare apples with apples.

You brought up reloading not me though.
Just because a Porsche drives fast faster than a Toyota does not mean that the price difference becomes less significant or the Porsche more affordable. And one would simply be comparing cars to cars. As I am comparing the prices of cartridges to cartridges.

Try buying some dangerous game ammo for a .375 H&M or larger. Similar or more expensive. Not for me this one, but ammo is the cheapest expense when hunting. Not so for a range day though.

Frankly I'd pass on a new fandangled super high pressure fast 7mm calibre currently only supported by one ammo maker that you can't hand load for due to its very characteristics.

Plenty of other 7mm magnum calibres around that do close to the same job and have more choice for factory and hand loading options.

Il be sticking with my 300wsm for the time being anyway it does everything and more i need and my ammo is $120 a box.

Interesting its no biggie for a lot of people, i use factory ammo, but i also like to practice on steel as often as i can or at least shoot a once a month so i am more ethical when the time comes to take an animal, therefor its far too much to be paying. But if your happy only shooting when hunting then yeah it would be fine i guess 1 box a year, no worries. But i go through 4-5 boxes a year, it’s getting up there.
And will it get cheaper…not sure it will, nothing gets cheaper these days its only going one way ⬆️

If i was buying a 20 box of ammo for $200, they'd better be the infra red homing "fire and forget" type .
