Thread: New Scope-Options?

Hey all,

Im in the early stages of looking for a new scope for my 270wsm. I have been looking at the Leupold VX3 scopes as they have plenty of elevation/windage.

Sizes around 6-24X50mm or there abouts.
What I would like is exposed turrets, and a good reticle for measuring.

Now I have found this Sightron SIII 6-24x50 LR MOA Scope | Trade Me
And quite like the MOA reticle, has anyone had much experience with this reticle?
Also is it actually 24.30 ounces? Thats like 688 grams!!

I can't be arsed looking up the Leupold again tonight as Im confusing the crap outta myself.

What do people think about the two choices?

The rifle is a hunting (Open tops) and shooting the odd bit of steel at range, and it will get changed into something 7mm ish when barrel is done.

Iv got a sightron sIII 6-24 x 50, and a leupold mk4 8.5-25 x 50, I think the sightron is a bit clearer and a bit brighter, tracks perfectly and is pretty well priced, the only things I don't like is its a little picky on eye position and the side focus is bloody hard to turn, other than that its an awesome scope for the price and has MOA MOA so it's easy to measure shit etc

Personally I run a 3-15*50 on my light LR rig. Have a 3-18*50 VX6 that will probably find its way onto my next LR rifle. I find 6 power to high for general hunting, and normally found I didn't use much more than 16-18 power (even though I had 24 power available). My big Premier is a bit different though, beautiful & clear at 25 power...

Just my opinion, doesn't help you out here... By the way, I would choose the Sightron out of the 2 you listed above if I was in the market for that sort of scope.

Claw, you bring up a good point. In the summer I wont be able to use full power anyway as the will be too much mirage. I already notice it at 12 power with the bushnell

I can't remember what those Vortex are priced at exactly. From memory they were slightly less than the Leupys in the same class here in NZ.

love my vortex, was cheaper than the equivalent ($820 4-16 viper HS) leupold with better turrets.

Also what are peoples preference on the reticle of the vortexs?

I'm running a 4.5-14x42 on my 270WSM - much more than this and it's too much for field shooting. Got a nice 12 1/4" BUll Tahr on Saturday at 520 yards with this.

I'm looking at a Burris C4 4.5-14x42 30mm or the Vortex HS LR (nicer retical than the HS).

I agree with the claw. 3-18 is about perfect for a long range hunting rifle. If only the VX6 had turrets like a march it would be a perfect scope for us.

Had a play with a VX-6 at Abe's. Nice scope, didnt like the reticule on the one I played with. Dunno whose it was, but I hope they dont mind that I was eating a jam doughnut while playing with it. What clicks? The turrets would certainly take some getting used to but if its repeatable alls good, nice and light I thought as well.
My March turrets are pretty positive and stiff. Most likely from a lack of use
But at least you know your dialing them.

I have a CDS turret sitting on my gun cabinet that I need to get round to fitting to my VX6. Apparently they improve the click feel a lot. But I agree, as they are they are mushy... And those horrible MOA things...

I'm also running a Vortex, rate it highly for the money.

It has everything you would pay a small fortune for in a Leupy Mk4 at almost half the money.
