@cambo, I am a card carrying Savage fan-boy, so not sure how unbiased an opinion you'll get out of me...
First off, Remington 700 has significantly more aftermarket accessories (triggers etc) available. It is easier to find aftermarket stocks, even if you look at NZ stock makers like Ken Henderson etc, they offer options for Remmy, but very rarely Savage. Not sure if this is important for you.
The typical anti Savage comments you always see are "they are ugly"People also tend to either love or hate Accu-triggers. I like them, easy to use a Bic pen spring to get them significantly lighter...
Savage actions have several other advantages:
Floating bolt head design - stupidly easy to dis-assemble the bolt. I have brought in aftermarket bolt heads to change from 308 bolt face to 223 bolt face. Try to that with a Rem700.
Barrel nut - swapping barrels is a piece of piss, screw the other barrel in against a no-go gauge, and Bob is your aunties cousin.
Most Savage rifles shoot extremely well out of the box, it is a pretty common theme.

If you went with the savage could you set back and ream the factory 243 barrel to suit?
I suppose any barrel can be set back and reamed, I had my 7mm08 tikka t3 set back and reamed to 280rem
probably be pretty easy with a barrel nut tho
Going with a new barrel.
Just have to decide on length and contour

Here's my Savage Light Weight that Ive just re-barreled wiht a Trueflight (.223). Couldn't be happier. Lock nut gone which makes it "look" better I think. But be warned that by the time you have bought a donor (Savage or Mod7) and re-barelled you could have bought a Tikka and a half.

Nice Savage!!
Had Tikkas. Still have a custom m595. That 1 I won't be getting rid of.
T3s boring as bat shit.
They're the Corolla of rifles. Do the job fine but are for Nanna's.
Terrible bolt release.
Heavy.
Over priced and over hyped.
Horrendous service from agent/distributor. Parts are drug money.
Would rather have a Norinco. Actually I do have a few![]()

Despite their horrible internal bore finish ! ( I proudly own two ;-)
For a 6 mm slr I would go Rem 700 sa with an extended( length wise not capacity wise) aftermarket internal magazine to make use of the longest oal possible.
Remington used to chamber the Remington 7 in 6mm remington , to give you an idea, the factory hornady 95 gr sst are a bit shoved in but they worked fine and feed fine.
For the savage, would you have an internal box magazine or detachable clip?
A lot of Remington blank stocks ( un inletted) for remington 700 will work for savage. You just have to find somebody competent to do the inleting for you.

The savage has a drop out mag and has a larger mag well than the remmy. Can load to 3.0" where the rem is 2.7-2.8" max
Can run 105gr pills in the Savage where 95s would be the longest in the Remmy internal mag.
After speaking to a gunsmith about it today, the Savage action is the winner.
Still like the remmy 7 so will keep my eyes out for 1 in 223 for some varmint fun

2.820 is about the absolute max internal mag length in a 308 type M7 mag.
The creed case is not a bad fit for the M7. Ive screwd a rem 700 take off 6.5CM tube onto a M7 and im running my handloaded 143gr eldxs at a coal of 2.813" which fit and feed from the mag. The proji is seated out mostly in the neck not taking up alot of the powder capacity. Can get enough Re26 in there without compressing it to push it along pretty well. Whereas using the same bullet in say a 260 case and mag feeding it would loose alot of powder capacity
Oh ok, I've done a few reduced loads for various cartridges, and have some great data of powder type and charges to suit 223 upto 308. Using the same powder type that Remington used in their factory youth/reduced recoil ammo. It shoots mint too. You could use a 125gr bullet and get it going slower than a "normal minimum" load would be going. It would have very little recoil, and if you used the right bullet, would still perform very well.
