I would agree with you on that point. A bolt hold open of some sort would be good. But with it being so easy to remove the action for cleaning not really a deal breaker in most cases.

Agreed, seems hardly any .22LR's have bolt hold opens. Don't know why?

So what sights/glass is everyone using ? This is purely for spotlighting and fast reactive type shooting mostly well inside 50 yards.
I was thinking some kind of holographic sight or red dot for fast target aquisition anyone got any recommendations ?
I am picking up a ruger 10/22 off a mate to trial he reckons it's very accurate and if I like it I have the option to buy.
It's currently got a 3-9×40 but I was thinking a red dot or holo sight might be better for close shooting under spotlight.
I will still have my 3-9x40 scoped norinco for further away stuff if I want.

On the subject of sighting in what distance should I zero this rifle at for the type of shooting I'll be doing ?

If you want to try a Marlin 795 I can lend you one. Think I'm running a 4-12 on mine and zeroed at 75m and happy shooting rabbit out to 100m or more. If you are mainly shooting closer then pick a closer zero. Just see where it impacts at various distances.

That's a generous offer mate, I'll see how the ruger goes and if I'm not happy I'll give yours a whirl.
Would be good with a nikko stirling night eater 4-16 on it that some good bugger sold you
But yeah for my type of shooting a lower power will probably be better, I really like the idea of a illuminated dot especially for the fact I am shooting @ night

795 wearing a Nikko Stirling red dot.
It has accounted for a HEAP of possums, rabbits, hares, stoats, doofa birds, even a fallow. I should do the trigger but, hey, it works and im now used to it.
    No regrets with it.
    Ya can't park there mate.

In all honesty a $10 LED torch mounted on the scope will light up well beyond shooting range. That set up on this wee marlin has accounted for 1000's of rabbits already.

It's one of those odd things that the 10/22 is more popular here, when the Marlin has outsold the Ruger over 2:1 world wide. When I was in the market I jumped on an American rimfire forum and did some research. Over there if the wanted to pimp and plink it was the Ruger. If they wanted to kill small things they took the Marlin pretty much every time if they had both in the safe.
