Short barrels are where it's at, but any of those chassis systems are Heavy. I'd rather have something like this
Attachment 14765
I like the idea of a short suppressed take down pack rifle but otherwise yea na thanks.

For years there seamed to be this train of thought that you could cut a rifle down to 16" but not more. If you deared do more it would be ruined!
I cut my main hunting rifle down to 9.5" and suppressed it years ago and have never looked back since.
My other rifles are all cumbersome longrange rigs and need a bit of length to them to serve the specialty they are are to do, but 99% of my real hunting is still done with the 9.5" .223.

Just from the specs of various chassis systems that I've seen, they weigh 3-10+ lbs empty. For example, the XLR chassis for a Remington 700 is 3lbs 13 oz (1.72kg) without barreled action. Adding parts like a folding stock, which is one of the reasons I'd want one, especially on a short gun, adds more weight. A typical synthetic stock like a McMillan weighs what, around 600 grams?
I'll check with him what the shorty 308 weights, so we can compare apples with apples...
Yeah that'd be interesting. I checked his site earlier today but he has no real info about anything up there. I can't imagine it being much lighter than the XLR, if at all.
He demo-ed these to HV deerstalkers meet - alum everything except where steel was required. single shot with capacity for another round to fall in to the chamber as a follow-up. Don't ask me what system that uses but apparently it does.
Holding a prototype it certainly felt like the business, he said a touch over $3k each from memory.
Modular with a screw - in barrel and field assembled so you could get it into bits for packing
He certainly strips all the bullshit away
4.5pound is quoted on his facebook page
bar optics and rounds and probably suppressor id say, still fethery light tho
If that includes barreled action it's awful light.
anyway i baught a 308 remington 700 this evening to see how it actually is. fuck it this has my interest, time to chop chop
Is 2208 still the go for a shorter than short barreled 308?
155 amax or their abouts
I am using 2208 in an 18" Barrell. Gettong good accuracy but have not yet checked velocity.
have been recommended to use 2206h by a few, NZ Hunter use H335 with sucess,
Have fun
Cheers

the remmy triggers arnt too bad, if it is an x-mark pro it will never change
for the purpose of this rifle it wont need too much done bar shortening and threading, if it all turns to shit iv got a 7mm08 barrel ill fit and it will be back to factory
this is more of an experement, and yes it will wear a suppressor
Short barrels are bloody hard on suppressors, the heat & pressure is much more violent.
And have the equivalent of a 38 special?
Righto Gimp, here's the info:
Q: What weight did they end up ? Complete rifle, minus optics and supressor ?
A: Not quite finished yet but almost. So far with only a short barrel to go they weigh 2lb 11oz. Bout a month away till I have five finished.
Q: So that is for the stock/chassis and action ? You still expecting the full rifle to come in at around 4.5 lbs ?
A: Yep that's for the whole rifle minus trigger and barrel, no chassis on my design. With a shorter barrel they should come in at around 4lb.
Scott's email - ssrnz@xtra.co.nz
I find rifles work better with both triggers and barrels
So 4lb plus scope and rings and suppressor? Thats pretty good
You guys know how much he wants for one?
Scott said they were going to go for a bit over $3k when selling but that was a month ago - they feel good. If I was in the market for a new hunt rifle I'd certainly be keen, makes mine feel like an anvil.
If only he did them in 6.5x47Lapua.
Scott will if you ask him, a 7mm08 and 7mmsaum is in the design parameters as are all short action calibers and chamberings.
The action design allows Scott to build a longer action to accommodate all long action calibers too, so a saum and a rem mag are on my list :)
Im off for a hunt with him soon and will let you know just how good these uber lightweights are.
Dead deer don't care :D
A 16in 7mmsaum easily spits out a 140g NBT or Berger VLD @ 3000fps so i regard that as a baseline when comparing.
MDT have put out a new light weight chassis MDT LSS Chassis system for Remington 700 I guess you could screw off the buffer tube if you wanted to break it down to stow. I'm not sure how legal it would be with a 10" tube though...
Your still stuck with the 700 and something mm length so why not have as long a barrel as possible and bull pup it?
nah it creates a whole raft of issues bullpuping it.
looked at it before and its a pain in the ass
None of that makes any sense to me.. or I must be missing something
A full rifle is 4.5lb.. but thats no trigger or barrel.. so its 1/2 a rifle???
and if you go shorter barrel the 4.5lb becomes 4 lb.. but 4.5lb was with no barrel???
How is it light weight when a factory syn stock and action is the same weight?
:brains...!:
I watch with interest.....
Yeah.. you're missing something I think. To my reading, the comment "Yep that's for the whole rifle minus trigger and barrel, no chassis on my design." is in reply to the first half of that question, which was confirming what he included in the 2lb 11oz in the first question.
So, Everything less trigger and barrel - 2lb 11oz.
Entire bare rifle, 4-4.5lb, depending on barrel length.
Prob makes more sense.. thats what 14hrs sleep since Sunday does ..
Got to play with the latest incarnation this afternoon.
I really WANT/NEED/MUST HAVE one of these :drool::drool: if only he starts making them for cac-handers :P
The trigger assembly is almost done, finished rifle is coming in even lighter than Scott initially thought.
Trigger design is a thing of beauty, hinges off the bottom, very sweet.
Barrel change is a 30 second tool-less operation
Locking lug design shares a lot of genetics with my Omark, yet another reason I like it...
He is also making some "stubby" cans for the light carbine, reckon firing a hot 308 load without a can on one of these will be a memorable experience, haha.
wheres the pictures?
