The Great NZHS take a kid hunting comp

We have a lot of experienced hunters on here and its time they passed some knowledge on to the younger generations.

So take a kid ,any kid on a hunt, any kind of hunt.

If you dont have any Kids even better take someone elses that otherwise might not get to go hunting.

    My local shop

has kindly donated some clothing(kids) hats and mugs.

Members Scribe-tuiman2-Tahrbound and Dundee have donated prizes including a knife, books, hooks and a suppressor to suit 17-22-223 etc

Il put up this nice little Gerber

And this Gamo 1000fps that has done a bit but just had a new spring

Members who donate a prize can pick their own most worthy winner.

Will let this run for a couple of months to give everyone a chance to "find the time"

Morning 'veitnamcam' A bit of a dilemma here. The two books I am going to put up for a prize are definatly not childrens books. I should have thought of that.Their mothers would be on to my case. The stories might stunt their growth or give them nightmares.

    Two thoughts I have had,
We could award this prize to the adult who took the kid hunting.
Or one of our sponzors could supply a suitable prize worth say around 50 dollars, the value of the two books and I would send them the money.

    What say you.

I will have to get my crew out again....sports sure slows the hunting down ... Time frame?, Age and I take it future trips not ones from the past

I will see if I have some unused gear that will be handy for kids
Fishing ... Hunting its all good

Post up whatever leathal(start your own thread in the magazine sect) but the idea is to get the kids out.
Unsure on the age limit. Or if there even needs to be one but if your 60 and taking your 40y old son out might not count?
Run for a couple of months to give everyone a chance to get out.

Before the end of last year I returned home from the Islands after completing a reasonably long and boring flying contract. Having been away so long, I was looking forward to getting home to see family and friends and of course, get out for a hunt.
I had only been home a couple of days when I got a call from a good mate who is normally quite busy to go look for a Cham.
I gave the cook my best desperate/pathetic look and surprisingly, was given a leave pass.
My then 9 yr old son Luke was to be an eager companion for a couple of days.
We based ourselves at Whataroa at said mates place and first of all, got out and about for a redskin which proved to be successful. We even managed some time too thrash the local waters to foam for a Salmon, my mate having some luck catching a 12lb Salmon. My boy and I just made some foam. We were I thought, off to a good start.
Our goal was a to get a Chamois of note and my son was really keen as he had never seen one in the wild before. We decided to have a look at some handy areas and my mate was keen to take his bow.
He knew a local spot we could split up and have enough ground to cover seperately, so we were off just on daylight the next day.
Luke and I come onto some fresh sign in no time at all and we soon caught a wiff of chamois. I was trying to explain the ins and outs of sign when my boy caught some movement a couple hundred yards off, in the direction we were heading. I had a quick look through the Bino's and was amazed to see a respectable buck I picked to be over 10".
I would love to have given my boy the shot but he had never fired the rifle I was using that day. Having fired plenty of rounds thru it lately I have no doubt he would have accounted for the buck on that day.
The buck was gazing in our direction so I was reasonably quick to get a simple, but good shot away dropping him were he stood.
Luke run up ahead and found the buck stone dead. I knew as soon as I seen him he was over 10 but not by much. I am sure Luke thought Chamois hunting was a bit easy after that.
After a photo or 2 I paunched the buck and carried him back to the truck where my cobber was waiting and wondering why we were shooting 5 mins after splitting up. He was happy to see we had some luck. He had a measure of the buck and he went 10 1/4". The buck's meat was made into some of the best bangers I have eaten. Having taken a few larger one's in the head department I didnt head skin it but cleaned the skull and it continues to be a reminder of Lukes first chamois hunt, although being a rather quick one.
He is keen to secure his first large game animal. He had a chance on a forum members property not long ago too shoot a thar. He decided not to shoot with no prompting at all from me, as he was not confident of a clean kill. I thought it was a mature decision for a 10yr old. I hope he continues to show the same ethics as he has done so far.
If I can get him away from his playstation he should have a chance or 2 to shoot a deer or cham in the next couple of months.

Hopefully a new hunter is forged. My boy Luke with the Chamois.
