I was a trapper for Pukenui for a while and culler in there before that. Only at the end of that time did one turn up. The odd one heard since. Funny you should say about the kookabura. I saw a couple over at Amalyn Dr on the far side of the bush from maunu. There's pretty good numbers of Kaka at the heads. They seem to like certain spots as you head for town. Harbour side of Mt tiger you often see them. They will spread as the pop is only growing. Noisy pricks at night tho.
More Tui's I'V seen in Southland for many years , and the Cuckoo's from Samoa have arrived early .

Wee swallow/swift birds stay in Geraldine all year, often find dead ones after really cold night. Was a heap of then around the sheds of my last work place..guess it's big eaves were somehow warm enough for them. I miss seeing tui.

I will put up with swallowing being messy - they are flying insect traps with a voracious appetite.
I have two customers where swallows are prolific. One in Takapau has thousands roosting there at night.
The other is on Omahu Rd. Never had swallows there in the past. Both sites are smothered in shite. They're a filthy pest imo.
Supposedly Gabrielle has made them relocate. I couldn't say for sure but the timing aligns.
The amount of poo is so bad it has become a H&S issue for us.
The range of what we think and do is limited by what we fail to notice. And because we fail to notice that we fail to notice, there is little we can do to change; until we notice how failing to notice shapes our thoughts and deeds
I finally had enough of all the mess on the deck and dive bombing the kids. After some reading and trial & error, the great yellow tennis ball positioned where the Swallows were nesting has worked great. Little buggers don't like it one little bit.
Neat little birds, but, not so neat when they are sh#tting everywhere!!

Not sure whats up with the swallows @grandpamac but down here in CHB the shining cuckoos have arrived about 2 weeks earlier than normal. Parries mucking around in some places attempting to nest right on the rivers edge. Think we could be in for an extended dry period although I hope not.
I've seen spoonbills in little shoal bay and black swans in the harbour... (Auckland Harbour Bridge and environs)
