    Te Urewera wandering..

Just had the pleasure of a few days hikoi around Te Urewera, saw a few deer, had an amazing history lesson from one of Ruatahuna's kaumatua, Ron Tahi has lived, hunted and fished in the area for 75plus years. He shared his wisdom over a cup of tea freely, just a cool old guy talking about his life...
Went for a quick walk one morning and managed to shoot a nice conditioned hind out of a mob of 4, obviously the lead hind as the other 3 trotted 50 mtres then stopped and looked at me for a while, when I stood up they took off and stopped in the clearing 150mtres away... I'm at the age where 1 deer is more than enough to carry!
As it turned out Ron turned up on his horse and after I'd boned out the hind he carried it all the way out, which left me with a very light pack and a very big smile!
All in all, if you're thinking of giving the park a try, now is as good as it's been for 30plus years... Sure the locals are protective of their land... So would I be... But treat them and their whenua with respect and you will be given the same in return...

I see your back, great to see that you did well. Will come in with you one day. I've got the Eli working with me at the moment so I do have some time available before I start my fire Officer contract with council in October.

Hunting is relaxing just like Yoga except I get to kill something.

    Great post.
Been a few years since I hunted down there.
Always ran across some of the locals, on horseback, going up the Horomanga.
    Good guys, everyone of them.
    Thanks for the photos

He nui to ngaromanga, he iti to putanga.

You depart with mighty boasts, but you come back having done little.
Sounds like a typical hunting trip !

It's had a lot of bad press lately... But, if you take time to find out for yourself, you'll be surprised...

Nice photo's; been awhile since I was in there. Beautiful big native bush, and yes good if you know or go with someone who knows a local-with a horse.
