I reckon something like this would be more versatile.

There are only three types of people in this world. Those that can count, and those that can't!

I rather like the idea of a free standing truck awning. What comes up from mr google is the oztent range which can attach to side of the truck but is also free standing. And they are just 30 seconds to erect for one person - some sort of collapsible internal frame system. Put up tent beside or behind truck and you've got space plus use of facilities setup in back of the truck..

Means very quick accomodation anywhere, and its driveaway.. The 30 second setup very appealing.

tie a warehouse blue tarp to the back end of your roof rack when you park, for the same effect

That's the setup i think will be best for me.

Bed or camp gear shelf system in back of truck with side awning for quick trip, and for stayovers an oztent which is quick setup and allows you to drive away.

I aways slept in the back of a ute with a tarp or tent fly over the door of the tonneu cover. Enough gear it takes ~15 min to se up and pack up. Then road tripping.

Now freedom camping near roads is close to illegal 4x4 is essential. I love just driving in NZ and sleeping rough.

New girl can handle outdoors as well as I can so camping back on the menu. Turning long wheel base landcruiser into a camper.

I will probably put a fold out platform and squab mattress in the back and put a small canvas awning (get fucked Gimp) over the back doors. Going to put a light tent fly over the roof/roof rack so you can stack gear up there and access it via the retractable roof window (the word for those things evades me).

Its good to be able to pack and unpack fast. Get a system going and its barely noticeable.

Can't beat a 70 series for holding all the junk and still functioning like a 4x4.
Your old mate scribe has a long wheel base land cruiser internal access with a pop top that goes to a double bed bloody nice setup.

Agreed Mucko. That land cruiser of Scribes is the bees knees.

The only trouble I see with a pop top is that you can't put your kayaks, dive gear. fishing gear etc on the roof... Iv'e got a heap of stuff up there when we do an extended road trip!
