Thread: Mud tyre suggestions?

After getting so badly spanked at the 4x4 comp I went to with the manukau 4x4 guys it's evident I need to cough up for some mud tyres for the Suzuki.

Anyone got any suggestions? This is for a dedicated trailer truck, never will be on the road.

Remember at this stage with my piddly 1.3L I don't have the grunt to turn anything too big.

Hoping not to spend too much. Under a grand if I can manage. Even second hand ones would probably do me fine. My GT radial mud tyres on the Hilux hurt to buy.

Look for some older simexs on trademe or sivlerstones mothing else is close grip wise if not on the road.
Silverstones are softer in the walls so a light truck will be better with them, you little truck wont sag the simexs much at all

Tires is not a this is good that is shit thing, you really have to match the tire to the conditions.
Ie sand flotation is king,wide long footprint is the go, pattern not that important unless you have horsepower to turn a paddle then your pretty much stuck with sand.
Soft sticky clay more open and chunky the better.
sand dirt and farm tracks IE soil on a hard base and or rocks a reasonably open pattern and soft compound that you WILL NOT get in a true mud tire will out perform the "serious" mud tires.
Greasy on a hard base= skinny aggressive tires
soft bottomless terrain = wide less aggressive tires.

Think about where you will drive and what the conditions will dictate not what looks cool or what everyone else has

Yeah those are too big. I've got 15's.
couple of the guys at the 4x4 thing has simexes. Bloody rugged things. A factory land cruiser had them and he nailed just about every track.

Thats because its a landcruser not the simexes Iv had simex/silverstone/bfg/kumho on the cruiser.
simex and silverstone are awesome mud tires but thats all they are, they wont clime a bedrock firebreak the compound and contact patch is to hard/small to get any real traction, you will roast 2k of tires while the guy in the stock standard whatever drives up on ats

If your are only gonna drive mud then go simex silverstone or swamper(tryed them too) but be prepared to be disappointed with grip in anything other than soft terrain.

Work out where and how you are gonna drive it then pick the tire .

I had Maxis Mudders on Hi Lux and an older Discovery for a while. Never got stuck.
Agree with VC these used to dig huge holes but had enough horsepower to clear them.
So obviously reasonable in the mud. Its all dependant on the terrain you are driving exactly as VC said.
Win lotto put a real motor in it with some horsepower to burn then have three or four sets of wheels to chop and change with.
Horsepower is pretty important is one thing I have found and tall tires drink it like the Midget drinks Tui...

Saw some of those just out of interest what sort of dollars per tire / size did you buy ?

Running 31x10.50 R15.

Can't remember the price off the top of my head but they weren't cheap.
They perform surprisingly well on the road, without too much noise so saved me having different tyres for different conditions and they wear very well too.
I did a lot of research before buying them and they were highly recommended by many!
I think the power to spin and clear your tyres is a big help though in the mud at times!

Track down Russell Biggs (he lives out beachlands way) and see if he still does the handcuts, They will be the best compromise for you.
You want 30"max at the moment but better to be narrower because of lack of power.

Simex's are the best mud tyres out for off road conditions.

If you do more dry type comps then bighorns, wranglers etc are good, but most guys use simex's. Might be hard to find for a zook though.

Agree with cam, you can wreck them easy as though

Go wide as you can then. Big is good but raises your gearing and that's not good if already suffering lack of power.
Those little things advantage is light weight and they don't fit most ruts hence they may be on the point of rolling but often get threw ruts the big heavy wagons won't.
