Con.... New wagon looses massive value off the lot.
Pro...TOYOTA...
unless they have improved the clutch and fuel pump since I brought one a few years ago I would not touch one again
Buy a FORD!!! FFS
Unlike Ford it will still be worth something down the track . That models been around you ain't the guinea pig
Doesn't matter what anyone says its the most popular ute in NZ. Thanks to Crumpy. Of course like the Ford Holden argument some refuse to look at the facts ha ha . Enjoy ..
Complete new Toyota ute coming out in 2015. Just to catch the FORD up. Good deals on Toyota, Holden, Nissan, Mitzi's because they can't move em and 2013 is goooonnnneeee!
You gotta start living in the present Happy and take off the rose tints!
I duck down in public if ever unfortunate enough to be in a ford.
Our fleet manager at work reckons they are having major issues with the new ford utes since changing from Toyota.
Huge fleet so not sure on percentages. Could be teething problems every new model seems to have?

do you understand the marketing on the 5 year warranty?
Dealers make no money selling vehicles. They make great money fitting accessories, servicing and repairing them so why not lock the customer in for five years instead of the traditional three. see where this is going? high servicing costs for five years to retain the warranty.
A mate bought a new navara 4 years ago, he got the new hilux a year ago and handed the navara to his employee. he now wants his navara back.
I've driven a few shaggers.
They are all ridiculously high geared and you have to rape the clutch to pull out into traffic.(same as most late model utes)
The one auto one i have driven you have to completely forget about pulling out into traffic. It goes nothin nothin nothin nothin holy Fuck we are outta here.
But at least it doesn't whine in third like every manual one i have driven except one and that had less than 10,000k on it.
It might sound like i am bashing Toyota but i am actually a Toyota man threw and threw, they just dropped the ball. If crumpy was alive he wouldn't stand for it.
That said they are all(the new utes) much of a muchNess
is the five year servicing free? if so that's all good.
the space in the navara is far better than the hilux and he is a pretty tall dude so it makes a difference. the D40 navaras are good on the road and lets be honest, that's where they spend most of their time. i prefer the manuals over the autos.
edit: is it still an extra $250 for a over shoulder belt in the back middle seat?
Definately worth having ;
7.Service Plan Offer
a.The service plan covers parts and labour costs of scheduled service items for five years or 75,000km (whichever occurs first under normal operation conditions);
VC the diff is that extra cylinder in the Ford, mines a 6 speed auto, yep I got old, but it's a great ute tripping on road, mines only a 2 wheel drive, only things that shit me is that fly by wire, it's really dangerous, specially shootn the gap! And the fucking useless radio, I itching atFoqrd on that, think ill gets Mazda radio fitted! 18 k and I still think yeah this is nice, and I've owned about25 new cars in my life, used to wreck them repping! 70 ks a year usually. IMHO Ford has the engine sorted!
Then I aint most people ;) Have done less than that in 8 years in our wee mitsi
My Hilux is starting go better & uses less fuel @ 60000, probably because I only have it for another 6months or so....
Gearbox need major work after 3-4000kms, clutch & or flywheel squeak, gearbox is still poos, whines in 5th, sounds almost like a BDA Escort in neutral, until you hit the clutch.
Front guard tops aren't "Bob proof", paint is thin, door handle finish is wearing around the window switches & edge nearest you etc
Handles great, goes really well, flat deck is mint, still haven't opened the boxes of King Tony Tools it came with
Getting a petrol next time, diesels suck....
I have a 2013 Hilux and I just about cry every time I have to get into it. Yuck!!!
We brought a BT50 (not new though 2009) goes great, tows well and all round bloody good now if only I was allowed to take it off road!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Apparently if I do certain body parts may or may not spontaneously fall off
Unfortunately having driven a Hilux of the same year Iam glad we didn't get one Sounds like nothing changed there. Very "trucky" not like the others on the open road
Shit I'm not going to sleep well tonight , hilux haters have got me thinking now . ?????????????????
Company car so I will struggle to sell it to you :)
It's just really poorly finished, gear ratios are terrible, the seats are horrific, engine noise in the cabin is out of control and the radio is shit. Also, if you have young children that require car seats you will honestly want to slit your wrists after installing and removing them more than once.
I havent driven the new Ford,The old man has and loved the motor hated the gearbox(6spd manual) .Company he has a lot to do with had one of the early demos, lined em new ford and his old Colorado.
Colorado won simply becase the ford spent more time with the clucth disengaged.
That demo went back with clutch issues and gearbox issues if I recall correctly, however both problems are common to all our popular modern utes cos they are to bloody high geared trying to get the open road fuel economy.
He bought a new Colorado.
Boss is about to upgrade shagger to a Ford so should drive one soon.
Hiluxes have really gone downhill since the '07 we have at work if the comments in here are anything to go by!
I had a 2009 Colorado auto, did 100 is in it, great vehicle, handled well and nice to drive. Didn't buy awe one because of that 2.8 engine, they just haven't got it right and the vibration in the drive train, common I believe, the blue tooth is evidently really poor. I think the finish over all better than the ford, but glad I didn't get one, that 5 cylinder motor is bloody good and I get between 8.3 and 8.8 is per 100 out of it. But in saying that guy up the road has a very expensive Wildtrack and he has shit loads of electrical probs, Friday car me thinks
Munsey, next door neighbour, a builders just bought a new SR5 and loves it, I nearly bought one, things that put me off, complete new ute coming out in 2015, ride is hard, but if you carry weight all the time the springs will be working and that will help, they had gearbox and injector issues, but sales guy said they were sorted, the cost more than my Ford cause they only do 4x4. They are not #1 on the list anymore and my sales guy was pissed about that, my advice would be if the deals good, screw them a little more, the offered me a trip to Aussie as well! And buy it they are a proven work horse and you get a warranty to cover yourself. And history shows they hold their value
Thanks for input everyone ( good an bad ) . The main reason I'd buy one over anything else is resale! . I can get into brand new ute , canopy tuff deck ( used) and auto 45 k drive away . That's a shit load of money but some utes are 50 something + on road + canopy 3 k . Maybe the ranger will hold there value ? My one owner ford courier hasn't . Crystal ball stuff really
Hate the way those two to three year old Mazdas and Ford utes break this pipe.
Heres my mates one. Anyone want to guess the just out of warranty labour cost ?
No help from any direction. Ever see a HiLux in that many bits? Local sparkies Ford did same in my carpark few days ago left on a trailer.
That's just one story. The one where the motor filled with diesel and locked up in the middle of no where is another not forgetting the starter issues
or the gearbox failure... Its so hard to decide ...

That's scary stuff. Makes you wonder how many bits will left over.
I drive either a ranger or Triton every day for work on roads or 4wd.
The Tritons are seriously falling apart after 18 months, the rangers are reasonably nice but really are gay and having issues.
Hilux all the way Munsey, if you don't like it and want to sell it, it will not be worth half what you paid for it until it is really old and has ridiculous mileage.
None of the other vehicles come close on resale.

I guess it depends what you want it for.
I've got a 2002 SR5 Hilux .. Its Awesome off road .. and -ok- on it .. floaty and bouncy. but hey you cant have everything
My mates got a 2005 Sheepshagger and its -OK- I've driven it on road and off, and its great on road - and good off road but not as good as my 2002.
My Cousin has the 2011 Sheepshagger and has said that the traction control has made it dangerous on the open road and he'd never have a trailer behind one ever after the traction control just about killed him. He's also had reliability issues ...
If I were buying new I'd be looking at the Landcruiser double cab ... but you're looking at 80K for one of those
Traction control is shit scary alright. Do not like it.

Eight hours to remove and refit the starter motor on the V8 cruisers. It's in the valley, under everything!
As for the 1KD P.O.S did anyone say injector seats?
Wouldn't own another hilux. My sheepshagger was the most unreliable vehicle I've owned, and I've owned Fords and Mitsis before that :wtfsmilie: Did clutch, injectors twice, once when the engine blew to bits and I had to rebuild it, brakes, wheel bearings. All way before stuff like that should have been done in any normally used vehicle.
I'd be spending similar coin on a mid 2000's 100 series VX Landcruiser. 100 times the vehicle, 100 times more comfortable on and off road, 100 times more reliable and it will be worth more than the hilux even after 15 years of driving the thing.
Iv seen plenty of broken hiluxes, the company I contract to uses them but this and all the above is just anecdotal and about as use full as a 2 shot group really . Iv had mitsis for 30 years (on the 5th one now) with only one glitch when the syncro went on first gear, local dealer covered most of the cost even though it was well out of warranty. My current ute is 8 years old, paid 40k and have been offered 19 for a trade on a new one at 42k with a 10 year warranty. Nothing is perfect, every model will have its lemons so buy what what ever ya like.
