    Question regarding AT tyres on the road

    I need to put some new rubber on my truck, I'm currently running HT's & that's all I've ever ran on my utes as 95% plus of my driving is on tar seal, problem is as it's a Ram Laramie so not "small n light" & neither are it's wheels being 275 - 60 - 20's. I'm limited to very few manufactures that make a decent HT tire with decent strength side walls etc, I did think about going to a 22" rim but then theres even less selection, most of the HT in that size seem to be from random outfits that I've never heard of, Ive been down that road of shit tyres before, they came on a XR6 turbo & were farken terrible & I ended up spending big dollars replacing em so never again.


    My question is what are good quality AT's like on the road for grip n handling ? as there seems to be a far better selection of all terrain's in those sort of sizes.


    I drive it pretty hard & with "Larry" being fairly big with plenty of grunt my main priority is something with good performance, I'm not to worried about trying to get 80'000k's outta em so if that's what you get out of yours I'm probably not really interested in what you think, more after the opinion from people that push em abit harder & can tell the difference between great - shite rubber.

    So when you say decent strength side walls you're meaning LT or light truck rated?

    I'm going to chuck a general statement out here, the actual tread pattern on the tyre doesnt make or break the tyre as a mud, highway or all terrain tyre. I've had some HT patterns that performed better off road than AT's and one MT breed that werent cheapo that were totally and utterly useless (I'd even go as far as dangerous). I had one set of muddies that were awesome - not noisy, awesome grip and were pleasing for wear but never seem them since.

    The main thing seems to be in the compound the tyre is made from, with the next important in carcass and sidewall followed by pattern and siping.

    I'm not going to make a recommendation as I have no experience of your rim size and no point if it's not a size that the tyres I've had a good run in can be had in NZ - but I'd look at an AT in light truck for sure.

    I run Falken Wildpeaks on a Mitsi Double cab. They stick to the road well and are quite. The only difference I feel as opposed to the road tyres they replaced ( cant remember the brand) is that they ride a little harsher, I assume because of the heavier sidewall ply rating.

    I have run BFG all terrains and MTs for 20years on yank wagons. You can't find a better tyre for them in my opinion

    The ATs probably have the edge for road handling but there is not much in it,they wear very well and you can air them right down if you need to and I am yet to loose one off the rim.

    I went to MTs for the wagons after they produced an all season version with snow cuts in the treds.

    Only down side is the price but they wear so well its worth it.

    I am having a very good run out or Cooper AT tyres. Quiet on the road.

    we bought a d-max, despite the service dept saying it didnt need a wheel alignment on its first warranty service we found all 4 tyres buggered after less than 30k (which peed us off no end) and they wouldnt come to the party at all and quoted us some bloody expensive replacements
    so we got some cooper 80/20's and got an alignment done elsewhere and though slightly noisier they ride well and are good on gravel and grass

    I'll second the recommend for BFG KO2 or 3. Very sticky, as quiet as a road tyre, capable round the paddocks, and i even got reasonable mileage out of them.
    Also had no issue with kumho. And for cheapy skid tyres nankang Iknow they do ht/lt but I don't think they do an A/T.

    I wouldn't put any money in to bfg they are not the tire they were, shit in the wet and poor millage

    Bfg ko2, falken wildpeak at3w, hankook dyna pro at2 and federal xplora at are all bloody good tyres.

    Had good run out of BFG in the past, but had to change to a different model in the last swap with those which was nowhere near as good. Cut chunks out, very slick in the wet etc so seemed like it was a different compound...

    Had Cooper AT3 but have changed to Falken Wildpeaks.
    Cant fault them on the road and are good in the wet.
    Coopers were greasy when wet.

    2 hiace vans. School buses so can't speed or corner fast. gps fitted. 2 x hilux. out of the four vehicle's the highest km were 30000km and that was on the hilux, 65yr old
