Marine engines have a pretty hard life compared to the same engine mounted in a vehicle, there is no coasting or downhill just constant load.
Also not usually the option to walk home.....

I am not up with the play on modern engines enough to recommend anything but will say make sure it is well powered, always better economy/safety to have power in reserve.
Also, a lot of engines are getting hard to come by. If you want just a bit of pep but plenty of spare engine availability (cos they might get drowned) a 1ZZ corolla motor would be the go.

Also, what size boat are you pushing, and what sort of budget?
