my left side "screw thingy" has either a padlock or a carabeiner hooked through handle onto hook through boat itself..... even if it came completely loose (which it cant as cannot turn when locked) motor couldnt jump up high enough to clear the transom. I do put a piece of flat metal across under the screw thingys,so not denting into alloy..mine is short length of old flat warratah standard.
