    check where the problem is; caller, cable or amp unit. try plugging in (say) your ph or i-pod to the amp unit. No noises? then its the caller end. Suspect cheap contact assembly for the socket. If you do decide to haRD WIRE, USE QUALITY oops cable - stuff that won't go brittle in cold. Good luck!
