Thread: Best value base layer/thermal's

After opinions on base layers coming into winter, have just run cheapies in the past and need replacing, just wondering if its worth spending the money on better quality and brands, if so what do i need to look out for in the way of material, ratings etc. Thanks in advance for any help

100 percent merino Thermals are at the warehouse for 30 bucks a top and same for pants.

They're the best. At that price it's worth it even if they get ripped in a year.

+1 for merino from the warehouse, sure it's thinner than better brands (have some of them as well) bit wear two layers if it's really cold. Ad has been said at $30 your not going to cry when a bit of bushlawyer puts a bit of ventilation into it

Get wool, merino is fantastic, doesn’t smell, and will still keep you warm if you get wet, modern ones no longer itch, I like icebreaker but lots of options, blends are better than just synthetic, but hard to beat 100 percent merino.
I have one that’s over 20 years old now, it’s ripped a bit bit still works.

wool, sure it gets waterlogged and takes longer to dry but the wicking of sweat away from the skin is great, if supercold then put poly over the top then layer but never poly next the skin as it makes your own personal sauna

under armour

merino gets cold in the wind, i have gone back to synthetic

my choice of merino would be the kuiu

I personally use Poly but high quality Poly
For me it beats merino in every way , I’m not saying Merino is bad just a that modern synthetics have come along way over the last 5 years and the old “ Merino beats it every time “ isn’t always correct.
Try some top of the range Poly from Macpac , North Face , Kuiu etc , you will be amazed how good it is .

I have one of these https://www.macpac.co.nz/clearance/m...sz=12&start=54 and its bloody awesome, fills the gap between being solely a base layer and being able to use a standalone item in a range of temperatures, its kind of like a base/mid layer rolled into one.
Use macpac merino Longjohns also. Have a pair of the warehouse merino longjohns and they are extremely light and the knit is reasonably open so they stretched heaps very quickly.

I did see that site i think ill try these im not sold on the warehouse thermals, have been to look at them look rather thin and if i have to buy 2 of everything from there to keep warm i might as well buy better quality

I imported tons of clothing - saw and had 1st hand knowledge of what the likes of the chain store importers had
Their cost price was so low - their duty/customs etc was worked out on a per Kg rate not per item rate.

I could never understand why/how the likes of our great and established world recognized Merino wool authorities/boards etc - did not jump on these lying pack of thieves

How does your supposed Merino get ripped when its a base layer - or should be a base layer

Try Cactus or Glowing earth Marino both super warm and nz made I used to wear underarmour base 1 and 2 but now I wear merino way better and it doesn't smell.
