    Camo gear?

    Morning all.

I'm just starting out in the NZ hunting scene but have quite a lot of previous experience in the hills and therefor a lot of good quality outdoor clothing, in a multitude of colours. I also have a fair bit of military DPMs (camo gear) so just wondering if wearing DPMs over other kit is an ok way to start out or would it be worth getting down to H+F and forking out on some proper gear? Thoughts?

    Cheers.

I wear green/camo nothing wrong with it mate. You don't need clothing designed for the hunter to hunt, save your money if you already have adequate clothing. most times I wear Warehouse $10 black nylon shorts and a swazi singlet. The deer don't care when I shoot them.

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

Sounds like you have what you need already. Have a look at some Ridgeline gear, not as pricey as most. You might find one or two things that would be handy.

as others have said, wear whatever gear will keep you warm and dry. Army gear is good, but if you have other gear, then that will be fine also.
Staying warm and dry should be at the top of the list.

Its hunting, not a fashion contest. Deer are colour blind so bright colours are fine also. I wear blaze orange usually and have a bright yellow rain coat with reflective strips.

Ultimately wear whatever gear you have, as long as it fits the purpose, that's all that matters.

H&F for "proper" hunting gear....thats a TUI ad right there.

Mate, all you need is stuff that keeps you warm. Wool, polar fleece, and hard wearing. Deer cant read brand labels and the only people who care about what brand you are wearing are probably not using it properly anyway....

To be brutal, even some of the outdoor wear at the ware house will be every bit as good as the H&F but the only thing they will be missing will be the mark up....I even got some from Postie plus when I was after warm tops.

As above. Use what you have. It's probably better quality than a lot of the hunting gear anyway.

There will likely be a couple of things you'll end up wanting to change, but do some hunting in what you have now, work out what works for you and what you'd like to change then make informed buying decisions later.

If I'd followed my own advice above I would have saved thousands haha

The NZ DPM material is light, comfortable and dries easily.

I think I might have given the wrong impression, by "proper gear" I didn't mean name branded stuff, rather gear specifically designed and manufactured for hunting.
But everyone has pretty much confirmed my suspicions so I'll stick with what I've got for now.
    Cheers.

I think it depends on what you're doing, but I would use what you have.

Fair call. Just take into consideration the important factors and applications that your gear will need to be able to do and stand up to. Then look at what can do that and go from there. Cactus also does some very good gear as do many others.

I have one brand I prefer but no logical reason apart from it being a personal preference ( Old original Huntech prior to H&F Chinese made garments) I browse Trade Me for good 2nd hand clothing and have more than enough blaze etc to see me out

I've always had a good run with The Warehouse farmer fleece cothes; usually better than the Ridgeline stuff. I practically live in the stuff so it gets washed often and I get quite a few years out of it.

Swazi tahr anorak and a couple of merino tops plus a blaze orange vest and one pair of kuiu pants is all I use year round.,spend money on decent waterproof jacket and some good Sox is my advice..
