Thread: Garmin in reach explorer

How many people have them are they any good worth there money over a PLB

They're good but the explorer editions aren't worth the extra over the se editions (both garmin and delorme) as the maps on them are shit

The mapping is provided by delorne on all these and it is rubbish. If you are expecting normal garmin mapping you will be disapointed

Thanks just looking at a PLB but the Garmin in reach seems like a better option the basic plan dosent seem to bad price wise

That's what I was advised by a major nz retailer.
When Garmin brought delorm they just re badgedxthe existing and used the old mapping software because the garmin software won't work in them.
I'm waiting for a newer model using Garmin mapping software

My dad has just been given an Explorer edition to try by SPOT NZ as he works outdoors in the back country alone most the time and even they told him not to expect much from the maps, but new software is being developed to allow them to run a better map.
The units are bloody good though as far as messenging goes plus weather updates are spot on and are very localised, for example I was on the tops in the vicinity of Mons Sex and requested the weather and I got a forecast for Mons Sex rather than just north canterbury or something useless like that. Havent had to use the emergency feature but I assume works well, like the SPOT system it runs through an international centre and the benefit of the InReach is that you can stay in contact and get updates from them ie:SAR have been notified, have your position but waiting on break in weather to get chopper in, I spoke with one of the blokes at Garmin when I was setting up my account and he said that feedback from SAR etc says that its unbelievable the amount of people who set of a normal PLB and then because they dont get any response for a day or two they move position and make things hard for everybody when there could be a genuine reason rescue hasnt reached them yet ie:weather.

Yep I'm waiting too.

I am going to buy one when I get to Canada as it will be the only contact I will have with home for 4 months.

I have been told they are country specific when it comes to use and cost.
I will bring it back to use here but a mate that has done the same has been stung extra cost for using in NZ or setting for use here.

Keen on one of these for the upcoming winter, cheapest place I found was a pilot shop..... Haven't bitten the bullet yet but don't need the mapping system as already have a gps, but it would replace the plb / allow my plb to be leant to hunting partner that doesn't have one

I have a plb and a gps (garmin rhino) already and have been thinking about getting a sat. phone. This might be a good option.

To be honest I don't think much of the map on the garmin gps at this point anyway.

Same as you bro but im going to wait for the next model were the mapping is better.
They look to be a good way to go.
