Thread: GPS satellite reception issues

I upgraded my GPS last year, and recently have had it lose satellite reception on every trip. Has anyone else had the same problem?

I'm wondering if it might be due to the Ukraine conflict. The GPS on my phone also lost reception at the same time on one of the trips, so I don't think it is an equipment issue, but I might take my older GPS along on the next trip.

That resonates for me. I was bush during the weekend they took out Osama bin Laden - I couldn’t get enough to triangulate- yet by the Monday, all was well again

The system was crap for civilian users during Desert Storm as well.
More recently my father found the GPS in his camera wouldn't work in Libya.

The Glonass system is Russian, most modern GPS's use both systems. Apparently the Glonass satellites are better at higher N and S latitudes

There's also Galileo which EU owned.

Yes, looking for dual GPS + GLONAS capability seems wise when purchasing equipment in future.

Wikipedia tells me their accuracy is comparable, which means 'same' for most purposes. If poor, one can maybe still make do with just GPS.

Had a Garmin alpha 100 brought in today with the same problem, we updated it and was very slow to pickup satellites, going back to Garmin to be tested.

If you keep weaponizing delivery/reliability of your goods, in this case GPS, people just get fed up and switch to using the other one.

You need to ring your goullies for that one

I have a garmin alpha that I use most weekends. Never had it lose reception ever

I took a Garmin on a trip to Europe.
Denmark, Ireland England, Sweden and Germany no problem.
Got to Russia showed Moscow and St Petersberg with no detail and nothing in between.

Chinese have a non public use system too, well it was govt only when they cranked it up a few years back but who knows now?
