Yeah but technology improves over time. A private hut I use is lit by Tilley lamps but not practical in a small tent I feel. Heavy to carry, and every time you move those darn mantles are useless

Ha! Tillys are high tech compared to my two kero lanterns

One I purchased with my first pocket money for 1 pound at the age of 6. I used to cook toast on the top of it while 'camping' in our pup tent on the front lawn. Can still remember the aroma of kero infused toast!

The other one I recovered from a derelict hut off the Akatarawas. Has 'NZFS' bead blasted into the glass chimney.

Still in working condition. Thought they were outdated a long time ago, then when I lived overseas found that most households in Maputo had them, as the electrical supply was so erratic. So I bought a couple of them back for keepsakes.

But LEDS certainly are the way to go. Just trying to find warm whites can be a challenge. Cold whites can be a tad harsh when you get back in the evening and turn on the lights.

I've got one of these, its actually bloody good and the battery lasts ages. My wife nicked it for a night light for the boys room.

Worth hanging on to that NZFS lamp for sure,,out dated now of course just like the crew who used em eh.
If yi wanted them to last over time then you treated them with a bit of tlc,many were over pumped,,split seams etc

I've used those inflatable solar charged lanterns before. Some GC left a pair at mangamuka hut but some ass knicked them.

Battery pack and two USB LED light bulbs.

So I couldn't get a luminoodle in time before my next trip as had to be imported. Ended up getting pretty much the same thing from Mr positive here in NZ. Seems like a bloody awesome product. Is a bit longer then the luminoodle at 2m and has the same output. Going to team it up with a solar panel power bank

i often go hiking and take a flashlight,knife,sleeping bag and matches

Inflatable solar lamps are what we use for camping. Maybe not so good if no sunlight for days though.

I thought this thread had died lol..In my experience the old tilley's were only ever used in huts. They were locked up once finished with until next time. Many cupboards were broken into in different areas and the lamps would be used and most over pumped,some stolen.
A great source of light back in the day.....I wouldn't be too keen to stoke one up in a tent though,bugger that eh.

I've got 3 or 4 Tilley lamps I no longer need..free to a good home. They may need a wee bit of tinkering, I haven't used them in years. Pick up in West Auckland, after lockdown.

Right. I feel like I've gotten 50 times more knowledge in the few hours I've spent scrolling through here

Not to disparage the many cool bits of kit listed here, I’m now in the habit of always taking in a number of candles - more than I need, so I can leave one or two behind in the hut. Been very grateful for others who have done so on more than one occasion. Using citronella tea-lights give an added benefit of insect repellence.

They are collectible. Put them on the yellow site $1 reserve and you might be surprised

I haven’t been to a hut in years, do they still have the metal candle holder? I made a copy of the holders for a mate who has it in his shed.
It’s hard to beat a candle in a hut, they are lite weight and last a long time.
