Thread: Insulated mat help

Hello. I had a exped 9lw for ever an a day it seemed..it died but Im now looking for something on par with its warmth but nit its Bulkyness.

Can you guys give me some pointers on a good inaulated mat that wont break the bank?

The exped was a little too large in all aspects except when passing out on it after a big day... id call it luxurious!

Im not camping on Snow but the ground is freezing over night.

Much appreciate any tips.. available from NZ stores...

This also appears a insulated via a sheet of material... have you slept in Mid May or Frozen ground with this??

Nothing is going to have a r value 8 and not be slightly bulky....the closest to warmth you are going to get is the thermarest neoairxtherm at 6.9.

I've slept on frozen ground with a yoga matt no trouble.

My go to is an thermarest neoair xlite but it's not a luxurious matt, it's narrow and reasonably loud to sleep on, some people would have a terrible sleep with one.

So many variables but r value is the best indicator of warmth and if you want something on par with your last one it's going to cost you a shit load or its going to be very bulky

Does anyone put a reflective sheet like a survival blanket on the ground / tent floor under their mat ?. I have been pondering this since reading the thread yesterday

I often cary an insulated thermorest fold up mat and put that under my air mat, it serves 2 purposes 1: it helps insulte you from the cold ground and 2: it protects the air mat from punctures.
Granted I wouldn't bother carrying it on a big walk in I'd just use my air mat, but even then a ground sheet under your tent makes a massive difference for very little weight or bulk penalty.
The only issue I see wit the space blanket/survival blanket is they are super thin (easily damaged) and super noisey, but in a life or death situation I'd probably still wrap myself in the space blanket rather than put it under my mat.
I always carry a survival blanket.

I rekon a Tyvek sheet would insulate as much as a space blanket surely. Placing a mat inside your bivy bag works well.

A survival blanket won't keep you warm on its own you need a heat source a candle is enough. Try it go outside tonight wrap yourself up and light a candle in 10 mins you will be sweating buckets
