Thread: What Jacket next?

If you do want a real good Hunting Jacket the best I have seen is the Sitka Downpour jacket. I first saw them when a guy came back from a hunt in denim jeans in pouring rain and the jeans were perfectly dry underneath! (He was wearing the downpour leggings.) The jacket performed just as well.

Looks like I'm getting my money back. Hamills turned the Hunters Element Jacket around super fast and contacted me super quick with a replacement. No word on what the issue was with the original jacket. I was told if I can find my original receipt I can have a store credit. Awesome.

Bought a cheap $100 jacket on Torpedo7 in the last few days a Yukon
• Scent-Factor™ (scent inhibiting silver ion anti-microbial) treated lining
• Waterproof and Breathable
• High count tricot fabric is ultrasoft, durable and quiet
• 2 zippered chest pockets
• 2 zippered hand pockets

Hoping to use as a mid-layer shower-proof jacket. was going to get a Stoney Creek Rock-Pullover, but the Yukon was cheaper and I thought it'd do a similar job.

So: Currently thinking
Stoney Creek Hybrid (for cold wet conditions)
Gortex rain-coat for over the top of that.


Thoughts on:
Stoney Creek Rock Pull-over
Stoney Creek HYBRID
Yukon Jacket
Deals on Gortex jackets (small and packable and not more than $250) Katmandu have a few quite good ones from $200-$250, but there must be better deals out there.

Additional thoughts: It seems from most of the replies on here, as well as a number of sales people I've spoken to, that these do-all stalking/hunting jackets are crap and don't really do the job they were made for and that they're basically expensive, less than effective, rain-coats.

Are hunters moving away from these jackets?
Why are they still being sold to inexperienced people like myself?

its a marketing ploy to buy Chinese shit, not to mention poorly made over priced ( stoney creek being the main one here)and a lot of that fleece rainwear and type stuff is all bloody heavy

'oh but fleece is really quiet' yeah bullshit tidy up your stalking act. my old man never wore fleece and shot plenty of deer. wearing the right or wrong clothing or quiet this or that has never cost me a deer

if you are really stuck on buying gear that is camo then look at Sitka or kuiu they are the best of the bunch, designed to actually fit you not some shit sown together in a warehouse in china that fits like two plastic bags selotaped together

swazi still seem very agricultural to me and still.. overpriced for what you get.

there are plenty of outdoor brands not sold by hunting shops which have years upon years of r&d and backed up worldwide as good product. at the end of the day, when its pissing down with rain and your walking back to the car or hut etc, do you really care if your coat is super silent breathable yadayada or whether it actually keeps you dry and warm. goretex and the like membranes do breathe but you have to layer correctly

do your research properly and find out everything you can about what you want to buy, I hardly ever go into a shop to ask for their advice on what i should buy, because I know what I want im just convienently looking for the best price..

the best bit about internet shopping.. do it any time you like and no bad customer service or pesky sales people annoying the shit out of you!

Having looked at a lot of the Stoney Creek stuff, I have to say it seems really well put together. I've talked to a few people who own Stoney Creek gear and they all rave about their jackets etc. I'm sure Sitka and Kuiu is good, and on paper their specs are impressive (well Kuiu anyway, Sitka doesn't seem to be doing anything worth raving about), but they're super expensive, same with Gortex products. Depending on what I bought, I wouldn't have much change out of $1500 if I bought a Sitka jacket and a Gortex raincoat. I could buy a 4WD Pajero for that.

Anyway thanks for your frank opinion, but as cost is a factor, I really can't afford Sitka, Swazi, or Kuiu.

I'm trying to do as much research as possible, but it's hard to find relevant specs and comparisons between one fabric and another, one product or another...etc.

Mind you that's why I started this post, so I'm grateful for all opinions.

Why do you need the sitka jacket just get the goretex one or as above have said the ex army coats.p
How often do your mates go huntung. Sc is prob fine for the couple of times a year buf when your out mosf weekens weaknesses show up pretty quickly.

Having been through two shit coats already... That could maybe have bought one decent one?

I've just got back from guiding in Canada the past six months. As a self confessed gear junkie it was interesting to see what North Americans were using. KUIU is extremely popular over there at the moment. I would have bought some if I perceived it as an improvement on my current rainwear, but to be honest I was pretty disappointed with it. From my experience the more one pays for something the more they feel compelled to justify its expense.

Every person no matter what they wore eventually got wet when 'active hunting' in the rain, even with the top-of-the-range, no-expense-speared products that were worn.

I can tell you that not all Goretex is created equal!
I wear Goretex waders for fishing and stay bone dry, so it would be nice if jacket manufacturers could accomplish the same end result, not sure why they find it so difficult?!

My advice would be to buy yourself a NEW (as in not used) British army DPM Goretex jacket off eBay and don't look back.
They are just a Goretex shell so you can layer up however you like and they weigh and cost bugger all compared to most other gear.
I've worked and hunted in one that has lasted years and have just bought another after ripping the sleeve on my first.

Just sold one of these I bought new in Auckland. It seemed a bit hopeless after wearing it for about 3 times. was good the first time. But yes they are very cheap. My mate has an Event jacket he bought for $200, which he swears by and a 20yr old Gortex jacket that's still going strong (although no idea what that cost, looks expensive). At least with the Gortex jackets you can just continually return it to the shop until you get a good one, as they garauntee their product. All seems like a bit of luck whether you get a good one or not.

After using a lot of well known brands that did not live up to the hype I tried ex UK military gore tex gear now I stay dry ,Liked the gear that much we bought Outpost Supplies (google us ) I don't know If its appropriate to advertise on this forum .
When wearing any breathable waterproofs you need layers of clothing to transport the water vapour away from your skin, if the water vapour cant travel through these layers then the breathable membranes cant do their job and you will feel damp, micro fleece is good at this. If the DWR water proof coating is not working then the outer fabric will wet out and wont breath properly.
