I see a lot of Asian's down here using a big fuck of mess of nylon, like an old net or something, bait tied inside it all, I figure the crabs go after the bait and get tangled up. This is off the surf beach getting paddle crabs.

Myself, I cringe at the sight of them casting a big ball of rubbish into the sea.

I have wondered for a long time as to what brought about the massive influx of paddle crabs, years ago collecting tuatua at Mount Maunganui we only seen the occasional paddle crab and then what seemed overnight there are millions of them.

I do know that paddle crabs can go a long time without food, years ago I set up a sea water aquarium and put all sorts of stuff in it including paddle crabs, off course by overloading the system most everything died and had to be removed including what I thought were all the paddle crabs...I turned the pumps and air off as I thought nothing was alive and off course the tank glass became thick with algae...months later I looked in the tank from the top and seen what looked like crab eyes, using a stick I went to dig it out and holy shit a big crab had a go at the stick...I cleaned the tank up and restarted the air and filters and gave it another load of sea water and that crab lived for a long time after that.

Dad used to use a nilon stocking filled with bread and jelly meat. Youcan cast that a fairly long way....ps side ways cast not over the head unless you want to get sprayed in jelly meat found that one out the hard way

depending how north in auckland you are, i think browns bay does alright. Another place worth trying are the bays like stanley bay leading to whangaparaoa. Sandy bottom, upcoming tide and dusk/night are some ideal pre-conditions.
