    Or hike almost straight north over the headland, plenty of foul ground there which holds all kinds of yummies. Dunno about a crab pot though.
    Up mimiwhangata ways there's lots of sweeping beaches which will be holding.
    Or down pataua. You'll have to be brave and/or strong though as it drops into 8m almost straight off the beach but could be tamer at the north end.

    Skip marsden wharf. If you hike south to the oil pier there's a couple holes around. As said, ruakaka you can catch crabs without trying.

    went crabbing in the UK as all seaside towns sold little nets ont he end of a string, just put some meat into the net and dropped it in the water, the crabs wouldnt let go of the tasty morsel even when pulling them out of the water.
