when didimo was a full swing thing..my older brother came down here to go duckshooting with us. when about to board ferry home they were spraying wheels and mud guards etc, asked where had been, any mudy gear..yip got pair of waders here..nope not interested move on..... funny as hell he came back 3 years later and the lake opuha mud was still on them, and his decoys...sticks like a crappy nappy to grannies best rug.
the whole fiasco with bovis has shown just how ..dithering..incompitent...downright corrupt the powers that be are....
when a whole herd of cows were slaughtered and the young stock off farm at graizing tested CLEAR... and they then had to be slaughtered aswell..prime beef animals some might say.... yeah MPI lost any shred of respect they had.
like many things we see today, some folks justify their employment by creating issues where there wasnt one beforehand..and keep the issue going to retain employment
like spraying wilding pines but making sure to leave a few unsprayed.....

and in reality the cleaning doesnt hve to be done on sight either....a cleaning certificate could be issued 50 kms away and last a week...how to police folks from going elsewhere inbetween could be tricky..water soluble sticker on hull perhaps LOL. no sticker=no access to lake.

Iwi asked MPI, who have the final say. They are closing for a month to get cleaning stations in place.

"Once we have the facilities to ensure all boats coming into the lake are clam-free, the lake will be open to enjoy for the remainder of the season."

I understand the risk to infrastructure, but what is the risk to the ecosystem? Genuine question. All of I've read is some vague suggestion that they might compete with unspecified native species.

Seems they form very dense carpets of beds which smother areas otherwise occupied by native aquatics and invertebrates. Thats all I know and I agree its pretty vague.

Pretty much, they aren't mobile and breed asexually and fairly rapidly - and also currently don't have a natural control in NZ. Spat are tiny too... They can totally change the food source and water quality profiles, out competing native shellfish and removing algae and what other native species need through sheer weight of numbers so not ideal...

...and we always hearing how filter feeders improve water quality. I don't know what the actual outcome is going to be, doesn't sound like anyone does.
