@A330driver I like singles for ease of use, but I use trebles as well. The top two lures are both running trebles. The type of hook can change the action of the lure somewhat and I’ll use whatever gives me the best action. The red/white popper and the bigger stickbait are yet to be tested on a rod- when I take them out to test the action I’ll test them with both singles and trebles to see what the action is like with each.

@Gibo thanks for the Etex and disco ball motor recommendations. Etex has been great to work with and gives a nice result. I made myself a sliding adjustable lure turner using the motor and some ply. Can adjust and lock in place at whatever length I need depending on how many lures I’m doing- can fit up to half a dozen 15cm lures on at a time.

I appreciate the reply,I’m genuinely interested as I buy lures ,but getting advice or tips from someone who makes/builds these and your reasons /perspective is always appreciated…. I acknowledge that a single hook is just fine,I use single hooks for a lot of my fishing set ups,but for the bigger lures ,I’ve gone with treble hooks as I’ve had (generally) better luck with them with finicky fish….. different strokes for different folks I reckon…. And…. Depending on what your fishing for….. but thanks!!

I forgot…. Totally agree with what type of “action” you are getting….. it makes a huge difference … I find it fascinating that you and @Gibo do this…. I certainly admire both your skill

@A330driver these are the first lures I’ve ever made, so I’m far from being a fountain of knowledge on these things. I’m just muddling through and figuring it out as I go. I’ve gleaned lots of good tips from Gibo’s posts & there’s lots of good stuff on YouTube that I’ve been using for guidance. But while I’ve done a bunch of reading and research these are very much figure it out and refine as I go.

Decided to have a go at some aluminium foiling. This is actually my second attempt. My first attempt I made two main errors. Firstly, I only foiled the sides of the lure that I figured would be visible on the finished product, rather than bringing the foil right up the back and belly, and secondly, when I epoxied over the foil before painting I didn’t get a perfectly smooth surface along the top of the foil. These issues meant that to hide the foil seams I ended up having to go a lot heavier with the paint down the sides of the lures than I wanted which ended up effectively burying much more of the foil than I wanted. And once I painted it it drew attention to the fact my epoxy surface wasn’t completely smooth. Overall it didn’t look terrible and would certainly have been good enough to fish, but I wasn’t happy with the result so I sanded it back to the wood and started again.

With lessons learned and a few tips from YouTube I gave it another go, extending the foil coverage, and doing a second coat of epoxy before painting to ensure there were no high points from the foil.

Still some practice needed, but much happier with second attempt. Not completed yet- next step is more epoxy, then eyes and fins, and finally a few epoxy top coats, but here is my stylistic interpretation of a koheru pattern

Yeah I actually super stoked with how that’s turned out. I was sitting there puzzling over it the other night thinking about what else it needs, but I’ve decided to keep it nice and simple and just go with eyes and a simple wing. I’ll definitely be repeating this pattern though.

That’s how I did the eyes for the red/white popper I posted- a hole punch for the white with a black sequin stuck over it. I got some good eye stickers online though which look pretty cool

Another option for the less talented, 3d print from a free online file, bent up some tig wire, didn't have crimps so just welded the loops, added some lead shot, might try some scaled up a bit bigger, might head out today and pickup some hooks and split rings, and a paint brush.

hand painting turned out a bit rubbish, can see an airbrush finding its way into the workshop haha. got some larger ones printing now, should end up at 180mm and in a metalic color, (also picked up some luminous fillament ill try also) hopefully the larger ones will suit my rod a bit better. if proved successful im happy to send some out so people can finish/make their own. have some lead shot and ss wire i can throw in the bag also, the hooks are pricey so you will have to source your own.
