Just discussed this with my daughter, she had mentioned the definite snap I sensed which I now assume was interpreted as a break.

With the swelling at the ankle and bruising below the ankle towards toes and bottom of foot I would say a fracture is likely now as well, (There was no x-ray taken) but the soft tissue injury in the calf is definitely the crippling factor.

I wouldn’t read too much into it.
It’s mostly irrelevant given you weren’t getting out of there by any other means. It would have been an awful long and painful carry for you by a ground crew.
Your situation met the criteria to dispatch the helicopter and that’s all that matters.

Update.... 3 weeks later with little improvement, same swelling and pain... I finally got that x-ray and ultrasound that A&E should have done back when they guessed at a soft tissue injury ... broken Fibula below the knee, damaged calf muscles, broken ligament in the ankle and now a blood clot just to complicate things....

Damn I’m sorry to hear that.
Hope there is now a clear recovery plan for you to get back to 100% as soon as possible.
You’ve yourself got some pain threshold there, or did you have a ready supply of concrete pills along with that Tramadol?
