Haha, they've definitely been shooting, trapping, and poisoning the birds here. There are millions of them. Literally blackened the sky on dusk and dawn.

Fine bird nets spread over the roosting areas will tangle their feet.

But - its a lake , and its only fenced on one side so the rats will swim out , and others will swim in , creating a breeding population ....
Only introducing males may work. A single female becoming pregnant would be disastrous...

    They could always use explosives...

And ironically, there's a note there about motorist killing Keas on the road? What a screwed up lot?

NZ Falcon comes to mind...... and isnt our forests supposed to be in decline because there isnt ENOUGH bird pooh being deposited anymore????
I bet the people who made concerted effort to remove rats in first place are pulling out what hair is left on heads...
they want birds to stop roosting.so shoot them in the roosts..works a treat for pigeons and magpies.....

It has excessive levels of ecoli due to all the bird shit. The funny bit is the further the streams flow through farmland, the lower the ecoli levels.
There were some red faced greenies at the Plan Change One meetings over that.
so the ecoli issues are NOW considered too high but will be more in line with pre-colinisation levels??? possibly..... there has been major effort to preserve streams running through dairy land in that area for quite a few years now,and my memories of them in the 80s says the ywere pretty good then too. well the ones around puketurua surely were.

Easy fix cut the trees down!

Back in the day they would just get a few good men with some guns. Every night for a week and then again 10 days later. Problem moved!

But no......DOC are here to reintroduce a pest which I thought was not keeping with the law.....I mean its worked in the past eh....now lets let some stoats out to sort them rats

1 last thing "Are you not ment to be going preditor free"???

a coupla things come to mind.........
history repeating introduce one pest to rid us of another then repeat then repeat
i have a sparrow and starling problem here too ..... is it cos i dont have rats cos the dogs and cats ahave seen them off but are too lazy to climb trees?.......
can the youth of today blame climate change and point the fickle finger at farmers and ute drivers ?
or perhaps the team that successfully rid the area of rats could go in with shovels and scoop up the poo and kindly ask the offending birds to kindly move on (to wellington central where most shit is piled high)
we couldnt release one gender of rat as under this administration it would be discriminatory to the other 26 genders of rat.....genetically modified rats? cool mutant rats running around what next mutant turtles ?
