Thread: Iron gate

Has anyone has been in to iron gate hut lately. Doc website says track is closed due to slips, just wondering how bad they are, cheers

You can still get to it, but there are some slips and large cracks to tiptoe across

Thought this might be the famous iron maiden I've heard about, but just another hut. Last time there was 68. Year not my age.

Been told its best to go up the river new slip is quite bad in creek passed the lodge.
but havnt been there myself yet

That pic of the burn above Rangi hut someone posted on here recently - at a pinch the ridge the pic was taken from on the opposite side of the burn gully goes straight down to Iron Gate. Not sure why you would if you are hunting 'cos you should have a deer soon after coming off the tops. But it is alternative access and I have done it. The return trip up is worse that coming out of triangle though.

Sorry to revive a dead thread - but when you walked in how long did it take? Just trying to plan for a trip in a few weeks. I presume it hasn't changed much in the last 6 months.

Pretty sure it was around 3 1/2 hours from the car park. The slight detour around slips/cracks didn’t really add much to the time.
