    1000 yard gong

Hey im in the process of making some gongs to chuck out on the farm, Was planning to get quite a few mates around and we all stretch the legs to 1000y,
Was going to have 3 gongs set up from 500-1000y Was just thinking if anyone has done this and is there any good ideas just to keep it intresting will probably bring a few calibers, havent been to any proper set up ranges and wasnt sure if there is simple things that will make the day roll smoothly or little challanges,

Gongs at distance is excellent practise

If you can tie a few 1 meter long rubans to some poles along the way you will learn a bit more about the influence of the wind and when to take the shot .

Hang a 100 x 100mm ar500 playe just in front of main 1000 yard target. Gives a good aiming point and its a real challenge to get consecutive hits on it
All those with dogs waiting no longer fear death. Those with many dogs waiting even welcome it in it's time.

Set an 8” one up at 250 also, have a crack on a windy day. Always a good way of showing people the affects the wind has, even at that range.

Helps having them setup on clay pans or the like. Easier to see misses for corrections.

I’ve got a range setup on the back of a farm I used to work on. Next time I’m back, I’m going to put a strip of white painted roofing iron behind each gong to help with validating, lots of long grass around gongs so hard to make out misses sometimes.

Make sure you’re using hardened steel, gets bloody dodgy otherwise. Fletchers easysteel in Napier is cheap as chips for AR450 12mm cut to shape, just need someone with a decent account there. If you’re out at 500 plus, you shouldn’t have any issues with damaging them, especially with 12mm.

Strips of 50 mm conveyor rubber for gong straps lasts a long time. A pipe spacer also creates some angle for deflection down, lessening the impact.

A lot more fun having one shooting mound as well. Can all stay together and shoot from one spot.

Super zoom camera or spotting scope makes it a lot easier to spot hits and misses and give corrections.

Can be more enjoyable to have larger and smaller plates at each distance. The larger plates are excellent for getting good wind calls, testing ammunition consistency, and for those people less experienced with the longer distances. The smaller plates are excellent "challenge" targets and are really good practice.
I would suggest getting good steel as the others have suggested and McNotty has excellent suggestions on hanging them at an angle. Bigger bolts are preferred at the shorter distances (M20s are great). I would suggest for the longer range targets that they use a single, wider strap so the target rings and reacts better with smaller calibers.

Also Part 6 of the Arms Act has not been repealed and is still in place.... so far.

    Yeah as Gillie said
It's good to have a big gong at 1000 that everyone can hit and then down size to add challenge
At 1000 we go from nearly a 1m gong down to cell phone size
Your welcome to come check out our set up if your in hawkes bay
