End of the day, you have to trust yourself and trust your gear, or the whole exercise is pointless. Thats what 100m shooting is for. Its not just to check the rifle does, its to check you do too, with other factors removed. Thus, if you know well what it is you do at 100m that puts the projectile where it is supposed to be, then you have to assume, if you keep everything consistent, then it can be trusted further out.
Any time you want to improve any aspect of something, you need to isolate other factors.
If you want to practice shooting unorthodox shooting positions, do it at short ranges. Take wind etc out of the equation.
If you want to look at your wind reading, then shoot from a position you know you shoot well from.
Also, you do not always need to shoot to practice wind reading. A wind meter does that. Walk around different terrain, see what the wind is doing. Measure next to different plants etc. Lots you can do to improve your ability to quantify wind.
Sounds like a fair comment.
