Sound advice to try out a few different brands / loading to achieve best possible accuracy in whatever rifle you decide to buy. Rimfires can be exceptionally picky when it comes to their diet.
Yep - I'm surprised it took 4 pages before someone mentioned an EM332. I've got one and no way I will ever sell it. I can't shoot for shit, but my 332 shoots bug holes at 50m

I see you are in Auckland, Ignore this if you are already aware but Gun City is not the only shop, serious shooters is a few doors down the road and Reloaders is just down in Onehunga.

Definitely a bolt action 22LR, a secondhand one will be totally adequate.

Norinco or TOZ if you want to save money
Marlin, Savage or Ruger for middle of the road
CZ, Tikka, Bergara or Weihrauch for high end
Anschutz if you have unlimited fund

A 3-9x40 scope with parallax adjustment would be ideal.

    Suppressed it.

    Shoot heaps.

A regular NRA style club will get you get a good idea of what wind does to a given bullet. They often have club rifles you can shoot too. Plenty of fellas with a wide veriety of gear.

The best thing I did for my long range shooting was a couple of seasons of NRA, shooting my deer rifle just as F class was starting.

It taught me a bundle about the wind, repeatability and control of the rifle.

You can't bullshit when shooting targets, the reality is there on the target face.
