    My Ruger 10/22 LR project

I know this is a bad-ass centrefire forum and nobody will admit they all own a ruger 22 (and experience childish joy destroying tin cans once a year)
BUT, I have finally got hold of one of these and I will freely admit I enjoy the hell out of shooting it, especially at rabbits.

Being that this rifle simply can not be left unmodified, I need to get some advice on what to do with Sir Ugly. I won't post an initial pic 'cause you've all seen the billy basic model so no need to go there. Now I've had the trigger lightened, some of the working parts polished and the obligatory tuffer buffer slipped in there. Nearly all are std Ruger parts.

    - What I will add is a pic of what I found yesterday. I was in such a rush to cast away the ugly plastic stock and barrel band that these come with, that I forgot to actually test it 'as is'. This was what I found shooting it with a firm grip front and rear off my bean bag seat

The ugly thing shoots nearly 1" at 100y using all 10 rounds! The hogue stock I bought with wide channel (for a bull barrel) just didn't work with the thin barrel.

    Questions
    - What trigger system is the best for these?
    - I've tried CCI and SK so far, any other readily available ammo brands worth trying?
    - Should I go for a shorter bull barrel?

Put it on Trade Me and buy a bolt 22. Fixed
The range of what we think and do is limited by what we fail to notice. And because we fail to notice that we fail to notice, there is little we can do to change; until we notice how failing to notice shapes our thoughts and deeds

    agreed, CZ 452/455 or Anschutz.

10/22 is like AR, you'll spend more money "customizing it" than if you just went out and bought a decent rifle

    Learned this the hard way.
    Bought 10/22, couldn't hit anything.
New barrel (Whistlepig barrel from USA), new stock, new trigger - etc etc etc.
Put $1500 into it, got it shooting amazingly - then sold it for $900.

Guns are like women - don't do what you'd expect, and cost money!

    put it on TM.
Buy a JW-15 for a third of the cost, get it shortened and put a decent rimfire scope.
It will shoot way better and have change in your pocket because you won't burn ammo.

10/22's are like cheap women. They do what they say on the tin but they are pretty loose. Spend a fortune on them and they are an expensive tart done up.

Never really had problems with my Ruger. Yip the factory triggers are poo, but I even had to pull apart chop springs and grind shit in my xt22 trigger before I was happy with it. I have found the biggest issue with .22's at distance is the ammunition. It's consistency sucks at 200m.

Locktite the barrel in, fit and overtravel screw to the triggerguard (drill hole, thread same and insall grubscrew)

Polish sear and hamer (don't fuck with the angle's just POLISH)

    Polish bolt and firing pin.

Fit aftermarket bolt buffer if you can get one Thats is.

Should be totally aceptable for less than 20 bucks if you already have locktite and grub screw. Bit more if you do the buffer.

I'm with Gerbs on this. Chuck the barrel, stock and trigger group in the gash bin. Buy a Jewell trigger, MacMillan STC stock, Volquartzen THM Tension barrel, cantilever scope mount, Loopy 6.5-20x40 VXIII. Set it all up then leave it in the safe for years... When I need a 22, I grab the old Browning trombone and the safe queen stays there.

I love my 10/22. It's accurate enough to about 75m with subs. I don't really bother with high velocity with it, sorta defeats the point in my view.

1" at 100yds is good for a 10/22. What ammo?

For mine I got a Volquartsen Trigger Kit and KIDD Bolt Buffer and Cocking Assembly.

10/22's are known for being pretty temperamental at cycling
subs, and I did have that problem once every few mags, but it went away completely with the KIDD parts.

By far the best thing I did was buying a nice stock. I went with a Boyd's SS Evolution. I thought it looked a bit wacky but damn, soon as I held it - what a difference! Makes it a pleasure to shoot offhand.

If I was doing it all over again I might go with a CZ for the accuracy, but I do love a semi.

I grabbed a brick of SK std plus subsonic ammo and i noticed 2 things about it. It burns dirtier than cci but it is coated in finer lube. Pretty happy with that so far. That Boyd stock looks freaking awesome. The comb looks to be exactly where I'd need it too

On another note - my weihrauch silencer was doing a fantastic job but it filled up with crud. I cleaned it all out but I think it will be going back on my tx200hc (target air rifle springer). I came across this add on TM, has anyone used one of these before?

I love my little 10/22. Its got the full barrel MAE suppressor and is the same OAL as a standard 10/22 which makes it a very handy little rifle for small game hunting.

End of the day a .22lr is a 75m max point blank range rifle, so I wouldn't spend a fortune on one. But I'm happy with my 10/22 and I can honestly say that the bolt action .22's in my safe never get used, as the semi is so much more fun for its intended use.

If I require a more serious weapon for longer shots, then I'll use a .223

I replaced the hammer on mine this improved the trigger a lot, but could still be better, put a dragonov stock on it back in the 90's to improve the handling. Got some 25 round mags for it, the ruger ones are the BEST, they are as good as 10 round rotary mags.. Butler creek ones need chucking in the bin.

Added a bolt buffer. Wish I had bought it threaded, might get it done one day.

The guys are right, itll never have the trigger of a bolt gun, but thats not why I got it.

Get a KIDD trigger for your 10/22. You'll never want to touch the trigger of another rifle again.
    They really are that good.
