    Steyr Scout range report

Spent the morning letting some lead fly with a bunch of brands to find a factory load to suit the scout. Did some prior research and found it eats 168gr SMK like a kid does a bag of milo, so i based my cartridge choice around/close this and ended up with...

    Barnaul 168gr soft point
Australian Outback 165gr soft point (was supposed to be 168gr SMK but Guncity screwed my order)
    Hornady Superperformance Match 168gr AMAX
Federal Premium Gold Medal Match 168gr SMK
Handloads by a family member made up of once fired (military) CAC, NNY and FNB cases and 168gr SMK. some were 44 grains of AR 2208 and others 42 grains AR 2206H

Heres the results with my shotty amateur shooting skills which ended up with an impressive (well to me) 0.35 inch grouping with the Federal coming out of the "Scout" rifle.

Hey Macca, I found that the Hornady GMX 150gr shot exceptionally good out of my steyr scout for a factory load before I came up with a good handload.

3 shot groups aren't enough to seriously compare accuracy.

But very consistent acRoss many brands (except Barnaul )

I'd do a shoot off between one of the factory and two hand loads preferring the m0st available or best terminal ballistics . Do 2 or 3 × 5 shot groups to allow for those fliers .

I'm giving serious thought to getting a scout as my "one gun". questions to the group being, what distance are you shooting out to?
    cheers from Steve

A guy who shoots at our FTR matches has one, in 223, and it also shoots exceptionally well . . .

I used one for a day, found the bipod to be a bit of a gimmick more than anything.
It shot ok but was a dog to look at.
