Where can I shoot when visiting NZ?

    Hi,

Im from Perth, Western Australia and Ive always wanted to go to new zealand for a holiday and I will be in the next few months. While there I want to take get out and do some shooting and I dont want to have to bring my own firearms with me. Can anyone recommend ranges that can offer pistol, rifle and shotgun shooting to tourists who dont have their own firearms? I dont mind where in NZ the ranges are located, I will be travelling to both islands.

    thanks

You'll need to organise a NZ firearms licence which you apply for through the NZ police website, will cost $25.
No need to worry, unlike Australian police and customs they don't treat firearms owners like criminals and a very easy to deal with

Can't think of any range that you can do all 3, but someone may know of one.
Not sure how easy it will be to bring a pistol in as a tourist either, rifle/shotgun shouldn't be a problem.

    Welcome to the forum Aaron9mm.
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!
Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms

Thanks guy, Appreciate the welcome. I will check out the NZ firearms licence, im seriously considering moving to NZ as the laws here are designed to cause as much financial and mental anguish as possible and yes, we are made to feel like criminals anytime the words rifle, pistol or even firearm is mentioned in any context to the police.

Where are your shoots located Beavis? Im definately keen.

Do as Beavis mentions, travel to Taupo, do some skiing and go for some shoots.

If your coming to NZ for a holiday you don't need to gain a visitor license unless you are bringing your own firearms and or using firearms on your own whilst here. If you are happy to shoot under the guidance of a licensed NZ shooter you may do so with out a license. The one exception is if you wanted to shoot MSSA rifles which are on a NZ "E" endorsement, then you would need an E endorsement. But you can still shoot semis in "A" configuration.

Yes your firearms laws are so demented. I returned to NZ as our shooting sports offered me more of what I like to do and you guys got to many snakes but i miss your weather!

Contact some clubs in the area you want to travel too and check out there shooting dates and pop along. Most will let you have a shoot. Im not aware of any place that lets you hire rifles etc to take on trips away.

Beavis and Dogmatix are right, Taupo is a beautiful spot with fishing, skiing and shooting.

You never know you just may stay for good
