What Hardware (computer) are you using to run editing programs, I have been playing around with editing in Capcut pro on my old laptop editing HD footage from phone (video and photos) thats been going ok. But recently downloaded the Davinci 20 free version and it is very laggy, even for the phone HD videos

I have just got an DJI action pro 5 and filming in 4k its to is lagging on playback in Capcut. I have run all the hacks as in, cleared the cache, save media to capcut, running playback on low quality, enabled capcut in graphics card and transcoding all files to proxy but its taking ages to import the 4k files and transcode to proxy files. Once transcoded its ok to edit with.

Computer is an HP laptop probably 8 years old, 8GB RAM (DDR), 2GB Graphics (AMD Radeon), Intel(R) core i5 @2.30Hz 2.40GHz.

I know nothing really about computers but know I will need to upgrade but what should I be looking at?

Longer term I will transition to using Davinci once i get a computer to run it as I only want to pay a one off fee not an ongoing subscription with Capcut. I will also be getting a full frame camera at some stage to film in 4k as well. Enjoying the process of capturing footage and telling a story, lots to learn and its keeping the mind active.

    Cheers FBD

I'm using Davinci Resolve 20 the free version on a 2 year old laptop 12th Gen i5 with 16GB RAM and SSD. However I'm editing in 1080 not 4K.

Resolve is soo much nicer to use than Capcut which I had problems with it would often drop clips out. Plenty of tutorials on YouTube for Resolve. The free version is not a cut down version and the paid version is industry standard for non Apple users, honestly give a go. I even have the previous version 19 on an old core 2 duo desktop with only 4GB RAM.

As a home user you will never need to buy Resolve20 the free version will do everything you need.

    Thanks Happy Jack,

I have the free version of Davinci Resolve 20 downloaded, it just wont play the 4k footage without lagging, Its definitely a computer hardware issue as online recommended 32GB ram minimum. All good just need to spend some more cash.

Not sure if I go to a MAC or stick with the PC, all my work is PC windows based if i stick with engineering work

    Cheers

Generally, I have found Macs to be better at processing very high resolution video, but even so, you need to pick your machine. Anything above 4K/60fps requires some serious hardware.

MAC or Windows the underlying hardware is pretty much the same after all Apple don't make hardware. Its how the software works on said hardware, having said that you won't find any apple except eating ones in our house.
