    Building your own hut...

Ok, have been looking at this at idle moments as have a mate who's just brought a block. The block is in the middle of nowhere with no facilities at this point so some sort of base would be good...

What are some good cheap options for materials for this, sources etc.

Plans that make good economical use of those materials?

Scaleable maybe, build a basic something that can be added too?

Some of the tiny house brigade I think are dreaming a little, circa 300,000 for something the size of effectively a 40' container is a little extreme...

If decent road access a 20ft container with couple of windows, another small door and tiny fire is VERY homely indeed. We often stay in one on a mates place.

Depends so much on if you want a hunting hut, a basic holiday bach, a flasher holiday house, or a full on off grid house.
If $/m2 is the primary concern then getting a single or double garage for free or low cost and then reassembling it and insulating, lining with MDF or ply would work well. Keep the electrics minimal so small PV and battery.

nothing wrong with corrugated iron lined with ply- stick some insulation in between - second hand windows they can be got cheaply - stain the ply inside looks good -some macrocarpara for bunks that would look nice

Including relining the inside, new fireplace and log burner (donated), solar power lighting and 4 burner gas hob, gas califont with hot water for shower, and cold running water, for under 10k. Added the lounge 12 months after the original rebuild just to give us a bit more space for family trips

A replica NZFS SF70 would be neat - the plans for those are available https://www.doc.govt.nz/documents/co...s/wac-huts.pdf

Have recently built 2 huts for my partners off grid property. First was 6x3m, lots of second hand or recycled timber, new in places where needed, 18mm treated ply floor, 2 second hand doors, 2 second hand windows, insulated walls and ceiling, cavity floor, and clad in second hand iron with treated timber flashings, and basic wiring for 12v . Not much change out of $10k, if any.

The second is 7.2x3m, roughsawn treated timber, 2 rooms, 2 2nd hand doors, 2 2nd hand windows, lined in ply, one half insulated, clad in second hand iron with the obvious wall in macro board and batten. Wired for basic 12v. Not much change out of $10k, if any.

And that was following marketplace, looking for bargains, scrounging up windows etc. Both are on treated piles concreted in, all floor joists etc are treated. And both can be unbolted from the piles and moved on a car transporter trailor if required.

Plenty of native on site haha. Probably less hassle to kitset build offsite and drag it in in pieces to assemble onsite though...
