    Applying for firearms license

Not sure if this question is under the right headding....
Has anyone here recently applied for or know someone who has recently applied for a license?
Reason I ask is I have a couple of mates who have applied well over a month ago and have literally heard nothing.
Where as I just applied to renew my license and received a call the following week.
Maybe renewals are being prioritized over new applications?

Tell your friends to be patient. As they are applying for a license for the first time, their applications have a higher level of complexity in that they, their security and their referees need to be seen whereas you are a known entity and therefore easier to process. Their applications will by now be with the district office for action and will get to the top of the list as time and resources allow.

Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms

Taken me 17 days to first hear from them, and about 5.5 months to get the license in my mailbox in Southland 2025. I think they do them in batches and the timing varies depending on what batch you're in and where you are in it, e.g. if you're the last one in your batch it would be a lot slower than the first picked. The no communication is the worst part. By the way I checked the MyFirearms portal frequently and it never got updated so don't bother looking for updates on that.

I applied in the beginning of February this year, just received my license about a week ago.

After applying, it was roughly 10 days later when i was asked to book a safety course.
The course booking that suited me most was in mid-March.
After completing the course, I was sent an email in mid-June to book an interview slot, which ended up being at the end of July.
My license was approved 2 weeks after completing that interview.
Another 2 weeks later and i received my license in the mail and i bought a Tikka T3x Elite 2 days later

I wish someone could've told me this when i applied, so hopefully this gives you an indication of what the realistic wait times for every step of the licensing process may be.

I'm in North Canterbury if that makes a difference
