Yeh I use one of these now. When just head down and moving along the track its also a bit of peace of mind for keeping crap out of the barrel channel and the odd scrape when pushing up against bushes. Also use it for tucking the rifle into bed when out under the stars to keep the dew off it.

Don't you just love the question "did you catch anything?" (looking at your slung rifle)

Personally, I encourage being open about it. Observe the rules, use common sense, be friendly and engaging. The more we’re seen, the more positive interactions we have with the public, the more they get accustomed to the sight of us carrying firearms again. I’ve had some interesting looks kitting up in busy car parks, but just smile and go about my business as though it’s an everyday occurrence. No issues so far even though the odd thought does cross my mind, whether or not I’ll find my truck vandalised on return I think we’re all a bit self conscious when it comes to interactions with others which in some ways is not a bad thing, as it makes us think a little bit about our behaviour.
It’s media propaganda that’s put us in this position but it only takes a small effort on an individual level to counter it.

Whats wrong with people being polite/friendly?

The only bad interactions i ever had in the bush was once with other hunters (inbreeds) during the roar.

Everybody else, including hikers and tourists always were friendly and very interested. Perfect opportunity to demonstrate that hunting is not just killing of animals but a means of aquiring healthy food while enjoying and developing a deep respect for nature.

@HNTMAD got this three times in one day hunting over the other side of the remarkables skifield. My mate and I always giggle as we walk off too hahaha.

The other funny one i have had is bumping into another hunter as we walked out with bags full of meat, blood on our hands and smelling if deer and they casually ask how we got on....on this day i said we hadnt seen anything and carried on...both of us chuckled for a while on that

I was carrying a stag head out strapped to my pack, a young family met me in a steep narrow section of track. 2 wee lasses of about 5 and 10. I naturally stepped aside and tried to hide the stag head with my body and a tree, mum and dad were behind the girls and I could see the look of concern on mums face.. once the girls passed me they turned to see where mum and dad were and upon seeing the stag head they yelled out excitedly and pointed “look mum!! A deer head!!” They were eager intrigued funnily enough and mum and dad just laughed as they went past.. most people are inquisitive about hunting, especially when you have a stag head on board. Just don’t be a plonker and carry your rifle in your hand with the barrel pointing down track.. my rifle lives in a slip and is strapped to my pack. Doc tracks are purely for transport as far as hunting is concerned. You rules clearly state no shooting inside of 500m from a track..

In fairness the only people I’ve ever had trouble with are cockys worried I’m going to poach (permits ease their mind, it’s a justified worry for them sadly.) and other hunters frustrated I’m heading in to ‘their spots’…. Most trampers etc I meet or stay in huts with are actually quite inquisitive and keen to be educated, especially the foreigners! We actually had one the other weekend come out for a stalk with us and taught them to shoot in the afternoon. Just be respectful and confident of your rights and you’ll be unlikely to have any worries.

I kid you not.
I had a Welsh girlfriend who had 6 toes on each foot.
A result of all that inbreeding in the valleys before travel became a thing.
(Fortunately she's not a hunter, fisher or shooter so is unlikely to read this post.)

Permit condition #5....No firearm shall be discharged: Within 500m of a Great Walk Hut or track. As in Great Walk Track.
