    Flying with Firearms

    Hey everyone,
Just wanting to double check, what is the ruling around flying with firearms, ammo, and all the works. A seperate checked bag for the padlocked gun case I assume, anything else?
Just flying domestic from Wellington to Dunedin.
    Cheers

Have you checked with whichever airline you've considered using?
They usually have T's & C's for carriage of firearms and ammunition posted on their website. I'd suggest you check there. You did, didn't you?

Check the latest info specified by airline & AvSec. When I last flew earlier this year Rifle must be in locked hard case, bolt removed and along with ammo (in correct packaging) must be in your separate checked bag. There’s also sorts of rules around batteries & any device with Li batteries

FSA just released a one pager on it. Check the airline page too - print both out and take them with you to check in

    Good advice above,
All airlines I've travelled will require you to have told them at bookin that you will have a firearm in your luggage, if you don't notify them and you get to the airport they can refuse to take said firearm.

fairly sure they want ammo (in proper packaging) and bolt in separate checked in bag to the firearm. So you need minimum 2 checked-in bags. But check with airline.

And when travelling with a firearm in a locked-hardcase make sure that your seperate check-in luggage that your bolt and ammo is secured in goes with you to the oversize screening area - I've had my bag pulled and "lost" for two days because a bolt and ammunition was found in the screening process for passenger luggage.

regardless of what check-in staff tell me I know take everthing containing firearms parts/ammo/rifle through O/size as Av-sec are screening the luggage -without delays and will come out and see you, if you hang around near the O/size check-in and tell you of any issues.

The ground-staff that I was dealing with during my lost bolt and ammunition saga were "sorry as they were only new and didn't know the requirements"

This can be quite confusing for Avsec who know nothing about firearms, ammunition or anything to do with firearms.

I recently had more than the weight limit for ammunition in projectiles, they thought this was ammunition and removed the over ammunition allowance.

IT took the police to get involved as no matter what I said about projectiles not being loaded ammunition they wouldn't listen.

Avsec employees are being tasked with doing a job they are not "trained" with the correct knowledge to do.

Given this you will be more knowledgeable about firearms and ammunition than Avsec
