I'd rather do it with binos than a scope H. Scope means you are pointing a rifle at something that could be another human...

Open sights do give you a much larger field of view. Guess you could strap one of these gizmos to a iron sights rifle, but naaaa

One of the more stupid concepts around. No I wouldn't use it.
Actually I sort of think less of you for reviewing it...

Let us remember that despite the media attention whenever something bad with a gun happens, hunting is one of the safest outdoor sports we have.

No, chess is a game. Actually I dont think hunting is a sport either.

56 divers were killed in only six years between 2000 and 2006.
In the last twenty six years there have been 35 hunting accidents.
But hunting accidents get automatic attention from the media because guns are evil.

How can it be one of the more stupid concepts around if it has been designed to hopefully save a few lives?!
I actually think your a bit of a bell end for making that statement.

It means the shooter is more likely to shoot someone who doesnt have the reciprocating device. Thus, if the concept is likely to do worse than the thing it is supposed to solve, then it is a stupid concept.

And plus, and I mean this most sincerely : I dont have to run my posts past you, and I couldn't give a rats arse what you think about them.

I appreciate the idea, but it has no chance of working unless everybody uses it. In fact it is more dangerous if everybody doesn't, because people will rely on it. We have no chance of 100% use. Even with legal requirement there is no possibility of 100 compliance, no effective enforcement is possible.

I wouldn't hunt anywhere near someone using it.

Agree, so we are saying in effect joe public has to buy these en-mass to tramp the remote bush so they dont get shot by wankers?

Lot cheaper to throw the wankers in jail for a while. Wanker2 might just notice that wanker1 has found bubba likes his butt and he's made a new life long friend.

Seriously, we need a) other hunters to pull up ppl who start to get sloppy, no one is perfect. b) an educational program and an on going one, maybe a compulsory course every 5~10 years.

Nice statistic, things like that for instance blow out the Green's desire to ban "fully functional" semi-autos (what ever they think "fully function" is, damn clueless wankers)

I tried an IRIS prototype during one of the trials they held near Wellington a couple of years ago and the product works exactly as intended.

The product isn't meant to replace common sense, and as we all know there will never be enough of that to go around anyways... The IRIS doesn't replace the requirement to identify your target with 100% certainty, it is meant to give the shooter advanced warning if the intended target does happen to be wearing reflective clothing. Anyone with more common sense than a pile of manure should realize that just because the sensor doesn't go off it doesn't mean that you can shoot into a shaking pile of bush without any worries.

I'm not saying the IRIS should become a legal requirement for all hunters or that anyone SHOULD be using it but it does work as intended. Unfortunately it's not the cure for stupidity. I really couldn't say either way if the IRIS is a good idea as I entirely understand where a lot of you are coming from in that it may give already marginal hunters a false sense of safety if it becomes common place... It's sounds great on paper but only time will tell.

Let me ask a question. You say it would not replace common sense and that it is only a tool in helping to identify a fellow human. Yet we have already had the red light analogy, human nature gets lazy. People WILL start to rely on it. You say you wouldn't yet you cannot speak for everyone.
    Couple points:
Do trampers and other people in the bush have to wear it?
You have to point your firearm in the direction of the "target" to get a warning. What happened to treat every firearm as loaded and always point in a safe direction.
Do you not think that "Hunter Education" and "Firearm Safety" is more important than another gadget which not everyone will use. Even if it were to become compulsory people wont use it. Again we can use cars and red lights analogy here.
What happens if a competitor comes out with his version so that there is not a monopoly. Are they compatible.
Personally i think it is a dangerous gadget that people will become reliant on. Target identification is far more important. Something my old man drummed into me was. Its only a "deer etc" if you have to take a snap shot/can only see parts you don't as you have not identified the animal.

No you may not quote me.

If it saves a life then worth every cent. If it fails just once by mechanical or human error then where to from there as far as liability and future use is concerned

Another tool to carry in the bush. Like a GPS, not to be relied on

The point is that some people will think that it can, even if it is designed to help.

Because of that its likely to create more issues..... I think its dangerous
