Check out the return fire in the video
Yeah man i would have been jumping behind that big tree if it was me
I'm sure they would have preferred him to go bananas in a concrete box to contain all the stray stuff, but he happened to choose there as the spot for it
What an idiot. Sympathy to the cops who had to return fire.
' "It sounded like fire crackers going off ... It was really scary, it was horrible."
He said people could hear the shots from about 1km away and had all come out of their homes.'
Maybe staying indoors for a while is a better idea.
And it wont show how many he fired as he did fire a few off....

I saw this one first and was interested to note that the picture was clearer and the "pops quieter ....Did stuff alter the sound?
So finally the cops shoot to wound and people still bitch? They did what was needed.
i wonder how many shots fired to how many hit? best to aim center of mass.
hope the cop (or anyone else) got hit
OK, here I go! Many years ago I Was in AOS and the general rule was to shoot to prevent further action from the offender. Second point is that invariably the public will rush to noise and in shooting situations there is obviously real danger. I suggest we think carefully about the unenviable position law enforcers can sometimes be in; I have nearly sh*t myself on more than one occasion. In a similar post yonks ago I suggested people read ‘Bad Blood’ the story of Stan Graham who was shot by Police near Hokitika in the old days. The young cop who shot him was pilloried by both his mates and the public.
The Police are trained to shoot centre mass they don't train them to shoot arms and legs that is too hard to pull off in a real shooting
situation, if they do hit low body, legs, or arms they have missed their target,
I can hit the A zone on an IPSC target all day at 35 metres with my .357 mag revolver but nobody is shooting at me
and I practise very week,
Most pistol shooters would shoot more rounds in a month than a cop does in their entire career,
The police do the best they can with what they have, I would not want to do what they do.
Where these the same Christchurch cops and bad man that our own brave 40mm was bagging last week from behind the safety of his keyboard?

That was my neighbourhood growing up. About 150m away from where I busted my nose. About 2 doors away from where the little red haired girl lived that my mother had her sights on for me. Behind the perp used to be a YHA place. Police did a damned good job in my opinion.
I like to place my shots for a quick kill (talking about hunting not shooting people) If I was being shot at, I think it would be hard for me to stick my head up to look down my gun and aim.
what he said.... a few years ago a scumbag escaped from custody down wellington way he was armed and had a hostage anyways cop shot him in the leg and he subsequently lost it.
i was told at the time by a cop that it was most likely his sidearm discharged before he had a bead on body mass (still bringing it up to aim) apparently the pistols they were using had a very touchy trigger and it was common even at the range to have premature discharge add to that the stress of the situation ......
i dont have a problem with police being armed but they do need more time at the range so they are more proficient in the use of their firearms...
as for the guy who heard the gunshots and took his daughter out to have a look............then moaned to the media about how they had to duck behind a hedge, .........idiot , he put his daughter in danger no-one else did
Sums it up really ...commonsense isn't that common anymore...
"We came running out to have a look ... they [police] were firing … whether it was shrapnel off the road flicking past us or whatever but it was really close and you could hear it hitting our fences and bouncing off the house. We could feel them flying past us."
@systolic What is your problem asshole?
I agree
I have no issue with the police having access to firearms when they need them. But I would like to see far more training in how to get the best out them when the situation calls for it. Practise, practise, practise. Once it is muscle memory, then they can concentrate on stopping the situation and not have to think about what is happening in their hands. It would be a far better use of Police funding than most of Cahills wish lists....
The police do not require firearms training.
The purpose of armed police is power and control though creating fear.
That is the reason that the media always show you a bunch of police standing around armed with AR15 and Glock, when the incident is over. Firearms are never put away after the threat has disappeared but the opportunity is taken to impress upon the public, that police can kill or maim you with impunity.
The fear factor is higher when you know that when the guns come out, the stazi will hose down the neighbourhood indiscriminately.
@systolic Wanna have a cup of tea some time? ill bring some scones. i'd like to see if you are big and green.
Sweet, give em guns and stuff all training? you are a damn fool @systolic.
anyone remebver the guy shot by cops at intersection of hlaswell rd /hoonhay rd in chch afew years ago after he tooka women hostage with a knife .ive nursed himand his left wrist is kaput from a 9mmglock rd that somwhat unsuccesfully rearranged his wrist bone structure
that wrist now looks like a skin covered very inept case of fibreglassing.
I also knew a guy (via TF )who was ATS in the david grey saga ,and talking of shit luck later as a CHCH AOS member ,shot in the face by a 12g weilding psych patient holed up in a flat in fitzgerald ave. He was apparently point man in passage outside door when the hua let rip through it
infamous press photo of him clutching at his face and remnants of gas mask plus copious blood!
he survived but became anti gun.
Frankly i wouldnt have a cops job for quids if this is the trend .WTF-this misspent dose of gonad juice has fired on cops previously.
spare me the gut wrenching handwringing and SJWtears etcetc ,but if you decide to go cop shooting for macho fun, well it dont take einstein to realise chances are you could come off second best!!
If they are expected to use firearms for any part of the job, of course they need training. I do not want someone given an AR15 to take to an armed incident and knowing the only information they have on how to use it is from a movie. They need quality time using it to get used to what it does etc. I do not expect a first time shooter to be able to shoot as wella sa varminter, but I would bloody well hope a cop would know his gear.
What planet are you from? Ill spell it out for you....They wont all fit on the gun range at the same time so they will have to take turns, thus any who are not shooting can go to the incident........
In all seriousness, they maintain training and information, physical training etc all while on the job. So squeeze in a couple hours here and there for firearms training on a regular basis. My 10 year old nephew understood the concept.
Yip - a cop told me a couple of years ago how much range time they do to keep their frontline status for firearms. From memory it was one day a year where they put 2 mags through a Glock and 2 mags through an AR, but if they score too low they get more for another round. He thought they need more training too.
Police use our range say once a month.
The trainers I see regularly are ex mil guys I served with. One of them is a very good and keen shooter in his spare time.
They have opinions on how much and what training is required but like everything these days it is all controlled by bean counters.
Wasn't much different in the military after Muldoon. Accounting for ammo and pyros was tedious but I spose lives have a price tag.

My son is a Sgt in Sth Auckland. As GravelBen says, they get sod-all live practice each year. I'll bet the Aussie cops get waaay more- their budgets will be better. It's a thankless task being a cop in these situations. The paper work/official and public scrutiny/ negative after-effects from you shooting someone are plain intolerable, even if it were clearly justified.
So who misses out when the cops are doing all this extra training with guns?
Half the time when I go into the local station for a permit or to get a gun sighted, there's nobody there except the office lady.
More training time on something most will never use has to come at someone else's cost.
"Sorry you your house got robbed. But the robbery squad are all at training this week. And next week they're taking annual leave. We could come around for a look on the 15th, after lunch sometime. That any good to you?"
"The traffic division can't come to your car accident because the only cop working is already at another one. The other guys are at training every Thursday."
What imbecile would schedule training or testing for a whole duty team at once?
It would be staggard like the military or any other organisation that requires all its staff to be current.
Pretty friggen simple to do. [emoji16]

This is what I imagine Systolic would be like 'relaxing' if I were to meet him.

Given that they're a para-military force, I'm sure they can organise training for current weapon systems. NZP are spending 20 million on new body armor so surely they can substitute their budgeting for training no?
