Good gun! Sounds like he had it coming pointing a gun at others.
Bang. Oops sorry he he
if you are dumb enough to point a gun at the feds, don't be grumpy when you are shot!!
A few more "accidental "discharges along these lines may help reduce the number of scumbag fwits out there
After other cases where numerous rounds have been sent down range... Maybe they were just trying to up the hit percentage by putting him in cuffs first
More info. Hastings man shot by AOS rifle - 17-Aug-2013 - NZ Accident and Emergency news
Seems like he had not threatened the Police and had complied with their orders. Bit of a muck up by the looks.
The way I see it if he wasn't being arrested it wouldn't of happened:D:DDamn shame
Rifles don't go off by themselves ,someone had the finger on the trigger:roll:
There will be a media conference in relation to the accidental police
shooting in Hastings yesterday.
It will be held at midday today (Saturday) at the Eastern District Police
Headquarters in Napier. Media should meet near the Poppies Cafe entrance to
the building on Hastings St. This is adjacent to the Napier Courthouse.
Clown, WTF, why was the rifle still loaded and on his back, If it was. Why was his finger on the trigger?? not a good look for the AOS. I know we occasionally make mistakes, but hey these are the experts, these are the guys who gazette us for our firearm behaviour. The shot guy might be of been scum, but the he was restrained and they where helping to his feet when Johnny Keen, forgets about rifle safety and oopsie.
I hope I have that wrong ,sincerely I do, we will see.
No more Beersie's for me, well not until the Rugby starts anyway.
Drove past the house today. Couldn't figure out WTF was going on. Cops, Fire and plenty of tape. Figured it was just another meth house find.
Been teasing one of the cops here all afternoon to not shoot me if I lay down!
Might have still had the finger on the trigger with it slung, you can sling a rifle across your chest too which is probable with AOS
I would have thought that the first thing he would have done was drop out the mag and check to ensure the firearm was empty before anything else.
Seems to be the old saying "Shoot first ask questions later"
A bushmaster with a trigger guard was hung on the AOS officers sholder, discharged and severely injured the arrested person who had been contained on the ground with his hands rerstrained with those nylon tiedowns.
Um...............
I've got some deep dark thoughts going on here...........
Treat every firearm as if loaded
Never aim a firearm at people
Keep you'r finger off the trigger
Don't carry it with the bolt/chamber loaded
Identify your target
I realise we don't know all the details and accept theres a policemen/woman out there who feels like shit today, however should any of us have made a mistake where somebody was injured the first thing to go would be our firearms lisence along with any weapons at out homes. Then the litigation would begin, with Police making a good argument about idiots shooting people when it doesn't need to happen.
It is entirely possible he or she does not have a fal.

Police don't either, it's part of their warrant.
Remember though this is an AOS member, not some spotty kid a week out of Police College, so he/she would've handled that firearm on many, many occasions. It's not like an FAL where all you do is have to answer a written test on safety, AOS and STG members actually need to demonstrate a few things :D However for the officer involved this incident will probably mean the end of their AOS participation unless it's a mechanical fault.
Army arnt free from UD's either, they happen from time to time and while I was in timor there were three or four live UD's in a 6 month period.it boils down to laps in concentration poor wepon handeling and in some cases but very rare wepon malfunction.its got nothing to do with experience or lack of as some of the army UD's are done by very experienced rifleman.just my 2 cents.
Yup. I almost reckon if you use firearms enough, it will happen.
I have had one because of a shitty trigger job I did on a Remington and one on a beretta 1200f that had a broken firing pin, free float on chambering a buckshot round.
Both times the firearms were pointed in a safe direction.
Man it would really suck balls everyone giving you shit over it if it was a mechanical failure. Tryna think how an AR could "just go off" though. I can see how the safety can get flicked off by gear - happens all the time. You would have to be real unlucky to get some gear inside the trigger guard to trip it, especially a stock mil-spec trigger. Unless the trigger was badly worn maybe. Will be interesting to see the out come of the investigation.
How does a police officer get into the AOS...are they chosen or do they apply should any vacancy arise?
Apply, vetted, vetted again.
Local selection course, apply, national selection course, national qualifying course. If passed all then they're an operational AOS member, if there is an opening.
For an interesting but light read

Five Foot and Fearless, by Liz Williams.
Because the initial reports indicated that the firearm that fired was the one found under a bed at the address. In this case, not knowing it's condition or state, it should be checked and made safe. Some of the more recent reports indicate it was the officers own firearm but others still say it was the offenders.
The Police have said it was their AOS officer with the bushmaster. They have been pretty open about it. The investigation will hopefully sort it all out. If it was a UD then someone will get torn a new one hopefully. If it is procedures then they need reviewing asap.
The Police also stated the victim was fully cooperating and it seems was pleading for help as was his family. Very tragic event but it does seem he is recovering and is now in a serious condition as opposed to critical the last few days.
Seems like the victim should have been in a inpatient care facility rather than community based care, opps hang on we closed the majority of them down in the 80s didn't we! How many Police call outs are to deal with people with mental illness who need more care than the current system can offer?
Sorry small rant over!
You are absolutely right there Littledog. One of my mothers cousins was in one of these institutions and he was very well cared for. I'd sometimes go with my mother and take him for a day out.
I know this was an accident, but if it was one of US, we would properly lose our FAL and possibly have to go to court, to face a few charges.
So hopefully this doesn't get swept under the rug, demotion for a start, or sacked!!
Hopefully it wont be swept away TJ.
The AOS officer was carrying out their duty when this occurred, where as for us its recreation in most cases. However that is not an excuse for poor handling if handling was the cause and there should be some form of discipline handed out if it was found to be negligent.
The last few years have seen hunters charged and sentenced to prison for between 3 and 12 months when they have caused the death of another. So some form of discipline is needed if a Police Officer causes injury or death due to negligence, however the nature of the job the Police perform will need to be taking into account also.
If it was a procedural issue then hopefully procedures will be reviewed, maybe officers with rifles don't assist with the manhandling of the offender. The investigation will hopefully get to the bottom of it.
Its a nasty event for all concerned.
I think it is pretty hard to draw a comparison between a hunter who uses a firearm in their recreational time and should only point and shoot at animals where as an aos officer whose job it is to point a firearm at and apprehend offenders with a said firearms and where said officer will and must point a firearm at a people in the course of their employment.
Completely different situations, I feel sorry for the cop but statistically this sort of thing will happen. Will be interesting to see where this goes.
Cars dont start themselves up and drive away just as guns dont fire by themselves. Both require an outside influence to work. Sack the fucker.
Yes it is different,
but imagine the amount of training these guys have had, compared to most rec shooter, no one is forcing these guys to be in the AOS.
but even if this guy caused a little trouble, he didn't deserve to be shot, a reckless mistake and the officer should face action for his mistake, if it was indeed his fault, the inquiry should hopefully clear it up and make recommendations to future events
